went to the short parent consultation this week and was surprised that my dd was graded!! dd only started in reception in january (staggered intake) and because the teacher had the full sheet of grades in front of her she only covered the names under my dd so i could see the scores of the children above my child and my dd was kind of in the middle. Anyway, is this normal? she's only 4 fgs!

This is how you teach - you find out what the child can do, and from that work out what the child needs to learn next...

How else are you meant to teach?

Far better than the alternative which is to teach the whole class the same thing regardless of what they currently can do....

PaisleyLeaf · 08/04/2011 14:36

They even place children within targets in nursery/preschool as part of the EYFS.

lovecheese · 08/04/2011 14:38

I personally would be a bit miffed if any of my children's teachers had a list of others marks in front of her for all to see. Confidentiality?

mankyscotslass · 08/04/2011 14:43

Yes, not surprised about the grading at all, it's part of the EYFS.

But she should not have allowed you to see other childrens scores.

We had my youngest DS parents evennig last night, he is in Reception too, an we were told he is on target to achieve his goals by the end of the year, and ahead in others.

HaveIgotNews · 08/04/2011 14:45

ok understand and makes sense, thanks for chiming in, but i would have liked to have a copy of the results to take home and the areas that need improving.

But - she's only in reception :)

Surely you're not concerned about which areas she is above or below in.... Grin

HaveIgotNews · 08/04/2011 16:26

why wouldn't I be concerned? Hmm IMO I thought she was doing really well but now I understand more, I would like to make sure my dd reaches her targets by the end of reception year. I wasn't told she was ahead or anything, just that she needed to work on XYZ... but nothing was given to me in writing. The EYFS is a very large chart that she pointed at!

Anyway, teacher said we would get final gradings at the end of summer term so not wrong for me to want my dd to achieve her goals. Also, my other friends dc's in other schools were not given grades hence my posting.

Have a nice weekend.

You are surprised that she has been graded but you want to see what areas to improve on? Confused

I do understand that at 4, they are babies though. I have a 4yo DD who will start reception in Sept.

Just make the learning experience an enjoyable one Smile

IndigoBell · 08/04/2011 16:39

I promise you she will achieve her goals. Because her goals will be individual to her and ones that 99% of the kids with her starting level make....

There not going to give her targets she can't meet. That's not how education works in the UK......

PaisleyLeaf · 08/04/2011 16:39

From "she's only 4 fgs!" to "results to take home and the areas that need improving" and "I would like to make sure my dd reaches her targets" in 2 hours!

I would expect the teacher would have made it clear to you if there were any problems with your DD's progress, so it sounds like all is probably well.

HaveIgotNews · 09/04/2011 13:16

uhm here we go the joy of emails/posting on forums without writing essays with full on details, thoughts, icons, pictures etc!! to clarify it wasn't 2 hours, parent consultation was last Tues so I was aware of what was said and graded and wanted to get some mn opnions if this was normal and not to be torn apart on when I said what and sharing what I thought after! Hmm

Anyway I would like to be involved in my child's education and as a first child this is all new to me, I shall live and learn so thanks for all your replies.

end off...Grin

LOL Grin

what the hell went on here, it makes no sense - why is OP getting miffed - you asked a question and people have answered with information about why you received gradings

if you react the gradings you will be diong yourself and your DD a disservice in my opinion - sit back and ensure she enjoys school and makes some nice friends - that is the key point of KS1 - and the rest comes

ninani · 09/04/2011 18:39

I think if you ask them for a copy for her FS profile they will give it to you. I have never asked for one, I was only shown it at the end like you were but the teachers always said that you can ask for one if you want.
