How much notice is a Head supposed to give if resigning/retiring

Just wondering.
Heard today that my DC's head is retiring at the end of the summer.

This school have a habit of not telling parents anything until the last minute. So I want to know when the governors etc knew.

You might think that this is none of my business (and it isn't). BUT there are potential plans for HUGE changes at the school and we are not sure if the head is telling us the full story so I am just trying to get a feel for how open she is.

teachers are only on half a term

DD's teacher resigned on friday and is off on Monday! So these things are never set in stone....

It's a terms notice and tbh I think you need to mind your own business a bit. It's no concern of yours when the governors were told.
If you have views on changes then communicate them - but why the need to get all cloak and dagger about a woman's retirement? Hmm

madwomanintheattic · 07/04/2011 23:53

it's the right time to announce now if she's going in the summer.

ours announced it to the gov body at this time of year. it gave us a month to get our act together/ advertise and organise selection panel etc.

believe me, the gov body won't be keeping it a secret, they'll be far too busy trying to get it together to recruit the new ht.

you could always, y'know, volunteer as a governor and actually get involved, rather than sniping from the wings.

Goblinchild · 07/04/2011 23:57

Sounds like she'll be glad to go. Potential plans for huge changes? Oh joy.

We got a letter a couple of days ago to say that our head is retiring too. She is leaving at Christmas rather than end of the school year so that the school have plenty of time to find the new candidate.

Our head gave a term's notice but subsequently stayed on for another school year as the governors could not find a suitable candidate to replace her. Still haven't but she's definitely going at the end of the year. Apparently there is a national shortage of headteachers. Our school is an ofsted outstanding primary in a nice area so I thought it would be an attractive proposition but it seems not. Perhaps not enough challenge?

MollieO · 08/04/2011 09:59

We knew at the start of the school year that our head was retiring at Easter. However as it was a retirement I think the school governors knew longer than that. We were sorry to see her go and the new head was the existing deputy head. Not huge changes so far but definitely a different style.

IndigoBell · 08/04/2011 10:24

There's a huge shortage of HTs. It is really hard to recruit a new HT..... Don't be at all surprised if your school is without one for a year.....

MollieO · 08/04/2011 10:41

One of our local private schools appointed a new head and found they had to replace them within a couple of months because they weren't suitable. Took a lot of time and money to source a good replacement (and led to a 10% bump in fees).

JWIM · 08/04/2011 10:54

Having been on the HT Governors recruitment team I have to say it is a very thorough and therefore lengthy process - in the state system. There is a shortage of potential HTs - and I think the accountability pressures are a significant negative. That said, we recruited on the second round of adverts but count ourselves exceptionally lucky - right person, right time.

DiscoDaisy · 08/04/2011 11:02

We found out a few months ago that our head is retiring at the end of this school year. The school couldn't find a suitable replacement so the deputy is stepping up as the acting head next school year and the governors are going to try again next school year to find a new head.

spanieleyes · 09/04/2011 10:36

We had just two applicants for the HT position at our school, only one of whom was anywhere near suitable!
