Not ever reading ORT books

This is a question for the teachers.
My DS (Year 1) despises books that the school sends home (about 90% of them ORT) and flatly refuses to read them.
Never has. The reading hasn't clicked for him at all in Reception, so I just more or less ignored the books they sent home then.
Once he got it at the beginning of year 1, I signed up with Reading Chest and he was reading the Collins Big Cat and Rigby decoders for a while.
Then we switched to the misc library books. He reads to me daily. Currently he is reading the Usborne Beginners series and has been
slowly plowing through the Lemony Snicket Reptile Room. Is there any particular reason he should be reading the school books?

Have a chat to the teacher saying he refuses to read ORT but likes x,y,z books. Hopefully they may be able to suggest school alternative to ort. Every kid is different - my ds loved the magic key books and non fiction ones!

Sensible kid!

I presume you've already talked to the teacher about this?

He will have to do whatever book his group is on for guided reading, and he will have to have a book in his bag for when he reads to teacher/ta/parent helper, but apart from that there shouldn;t be a problem.

Be a bit careful about letting him "flatly refuse" to do school stuff though - you don;t want him "flatly refusing" to do his GCSE history course work.

Do they not have any other books?

DS went through a stage when he wasn't keen on the ORT, I talked to the teacher and she sent home some non-fiction, level appropriate books for him.

He's just gone up a level and I have been thrilled to discover that he is now off ORT.

The only problem might be if he is also not making attempts to read the ORT books while in school. It might make it hard for the teachers to assess his actual reading ability and may lead to them underestimating his skills.
So long as you are talking to the school, there shouldn't be a problem.
