Why Are They Hiding Levels Info?

So about 3 weeks ago, we had dd's parents evening when I asked her teacher her level and expected level for numeracy.

He didn't know as he doesn't teach her maths but said he'd ask the teacher. He told us her current literacy level and the level at which the school would like them to be at by the end of summer term.

We heard nothing back the first week so asked dd to show a little note I'd written in her diary to the teacher. She came saying, dd's new school would be sent the leves (dd is moving to a new middle school in a different county).

Still nothing else and no level info.

So today, as they're always so busy in the mornings/after school, I sent a proper letter, explaining that whilst I know it's not the be all and end all, we would really like to know her level for numeracy and the school average at end of yr 4.

She sent back a letter tonight saying, "Although it's not normally the school policy to discuss levels......bla bla bla".

She still didn't tell me the school average at end yr 4!!!

Am I entitled to know - I shall be looking national average but this skews the answer because all schools are different depending on ability of all students.

Is she just being obnoxious?

For us, it is important to know as we're a forces family and this is DD's 3rd school so far. We want to know if she's below average etc so my SIL can tutor her a bit before we move.

I really don't understand why the school is being so secretive about levels.

There is no national average at Y4.

The expected level at the end of Y6 is a 4b and the expected level at the end of Y2 is a 2b. Since Y4 is smack bang in the middle, schools usually hope that children are at least at 3b by the end of Y4. But it's an unofficial target.

I can't see why a school wouldn't share levels info either. But more important to find out would be her next steps, perhaps, and how you could help at home.

Thank you Feenie - phew - she is currently working at around 4C so I guess she's fine then. I'll stop worrying.
