music lessons....specifically guitar lessons....

Just wondered if anyone has experience of this. What would you say was a good age to start learning the guitar? Is it an instrument that you get quite quick 'rewards' from? (I think DS needs to see progress quite fast to want to continue with anything).
Also, my DS has hypermobility which makes his fingers very bendy and his writing is diabolical as is his co ordination....setting him up to fail, or would guitar be ok?
Thanks for any thoughts!

No advice re the hyper-mobility, sorry, but at my DD's school they can start guitar lessons in year 2. Very popular and I think quite quick results.

Hypermobile dd1 plays guitar. She started in Y3. Dd2 started in Y2.

My children enjoy the guitar, but dd1 only really got the hang of chords at age 9/10. However, she was able to play lots of tunes without chords at age 7. Dd2 cannot do chords yet, but she can play tunes such as Silent Night well.

The children play on 3/4 size guitars, but you can also get 1/2 sized ones. Our 1/2 sized guitar was so poor quality that the guitar teacher begged us to change it though, so dd2 is on a 3/4 now. At first it was huge for her, but she has had a growth spurt now.

IME guitar is not suitable children below Y2, and Y3 seems a good time to start. Children do need to press down on the fret board to play a clear note, even when chords are not being played. This takes getting used to, and can be difficult at first.

Am just starting ds with lessons. He is year 2 and he just announced he wants to play.Shortly before he died dp bought ds a half size guitar (good make).Re instant results,I have warned ds it could take a while to learn to play it properly but am hoping he has fun with basic stuff in the meantime. No idea re hypermobility sorry

thank you for the responses!
DS is year 4 (age 8) so actually sounds like it might be a good time. His motor skills and co ordination are probably more like a kid in year 2 or so anyway.
It does sound worth a go - think I will get DS a three quarter sized guitar and take it from there :-)
So sorry to hear about your DP MavisE.

DD is yr4 and has history of not sticking with things. Started 1to1 guitar lessons at school this term and now voluntarily (!) does her daily practise and enjoys playing. So yes I think it can give quick rewards - hope it goes well for you.
