my son in reception class with 16 boys is having problems with child that went to nursery with, mostly name calling and can't join in. have spoken to teacher but as is a playground issue said would look out but to tell my son not to react.

have spoken to him but he is 4 and doesn't get it. have also spoken to his mum but seems to have made it worse - my mum says to stay away etc.

any ideas?? help

On one level it's good to tell your son not to react, as it's part of life and he has to find ways of dealing with all sorts, but then again it's a bit shocking for the teacher to implicitly tolerate the other boy doing it.

If it's really upsetting your son, I'd go back to the teacher, say it's not on as it's bullying and ask what they're going to do about it.

Just so you can compare, at DS's school the kids are told that even words such as 'idiot' aren't allowed. Nothing that puts anyone down or that excludes anyone is tolerated, even in reception.

A playground issue???? Bullying on school premises surely. I doubt this is only going on there
I would go back to teacher and expect playground supervisors to be told what is going on.

thanks for your advice spoken to teacher again following a punching incident, they took action and and now watching him at play times.

is it ever ok to talk to his mum about this, or should i leave this to the school? she thinks he is an angel!

am new at this school thing, i do ask my sister but she has girls and they play differently.

I have DS in Reception (2nd child so been here before!) and if it was happening to him I would let the school deal with it, not tackle the Mum, especially if she thinks he is an angel. She won't believe you and won't like you telling her. As you will probably be at school gates for the next 7 years its not worth stirring things up yet (though I wouldn't rule it out at some point)
Keep on at school to make sure they deal with it. They can tell her about her little angel's behaviour if necessary.
