Primary Schools in Brentwood and Chelmsford

Hi

We are looking at making the big move from London, my DH works in Essex, so the above towns and their surrounds make sense.

Ive been trying to suss out the good primaries as DD will start school in Sept 2012, but there seems a lot of church schools and not much else that looks any good.

Can anyone shed any light on which are the primaries to look at? I dont mind a church school (I went to catholic schools from 4-18 yrs) but we dont practice and it seems that Essex church schools do expect attendance and involvement in the church (which is fair enough!) - but there seems to be an awful ot of them ... help!

I used to live in Chelmsford, and my family still do.
Look at Springfield, Perryfields is a great school, my neices go their as do the children of my best friend. You'll also be in the catchment area for Boswells which is a great secondary.

fwiw, I went to Cathedral school but in those days there was no going to church malarky except for the end of term assembly in the Cathedral.

Hi - thanks for the info. Springfield looks good, as does Tyrrells, Barnes Farm and Newlands SPring. This is only going by Ofsted though.

Where is nice to live in Chelmsford? We would like a family house - 4 bed and a garage type of thing. Id love to remain in a period house, but DH is desperate for a garage for man - things ... he has been denied it all these years, so think its only fair!

You won't find too many period houses in Chelmsford. My sister lives in a 60's 3 bed (with garage!) and we grew up in a similar one. Springfield basically grew in the 60's

My Mum lives in a lovely house (1950's) but it's not cheap, so really depends on your budget.

It is a nice area though, no antisocial behaviour etc (bit boring when you're growing up though Grin )

maggie75 · 22/03/2011 13:35

thanks again - yes, suspected that about chelmsford. seems that its time to embrace my true inner desire for a kitchen/diner and utility room!

Im sure your right about 'boring' - DD will resent me forever for having moved out of london before she was old enough to 'enjoy' it in a teenage fashion im sure.

chelmsford does seem cheaper than any of the areas of London we have looked at, so might be able to stretch ... where does your mum live if you dont mind me being nosey?

Still in Springfield, but just a slightly older road, rather than the estates - I use the word estate loosly as it's not 'estates' in a negative way.

The good thing about the 1960's houses is that the rooms are quite generous, as well as a garage/drive/front garden. I live in Brighton and covert those things secretly Grin

I grew up in Danbury - Danbury Park County Primary school was and still is lovely!

maggie75 · 22/03/2011 21:22

ooh, interesting you mentioned Danbury ...had heard that Danbury was nice - Im used to City life though - what is the village and facilities like? Dont expect bars etc (well past that!), but cafe/park/library/activities/pub?

St Helen's in Brentwood is a fantastic school, quite a large primary though and if I remember rightly the infants and juniors are on different sites. Still an amazing school though, can't recommend highly enough. Brentwood is even pricier than Chelmsford, especially the Shenfield end. Ingrave is nearby and lovely though, semi-rural area, and St Helen's is still the nearest RC school so it's in the catchment area, or there's a village school in Ingrave but I don't know if it's any good, think it might be CofE.

maggie75 · 22/03/2011 21:45

Hi thanks for the info, but no good for us i doubt unless we get DD dunked ASAP. Myself and DH were both brought up RC but we havent followed this through with DD, and it looks like both RC and CofE schools in Brentwood require regular church attendance/baptism etc. So many CofE / RC schools in the area ... and they seem like the good ones of course.

OP posts:
pyjamababe · 22/03/2011 21:58

Oh I see what you mean now. Well you would definitely need a baptism certificate, but I teach in an over-subscribed big RC primary and no-one ever seems to follow up the church attendance thing! You are from out of area anyway so how are they to know, unless they want a letter from a priest? Hope not! Still, it's a nice part of the world so I'm sure there are plenty of good schools around. Saffron Walden is gorgeous, but I'm waffling now and not being all that helpful... Sorry! Good luck with the move.

magicmummy1 · 22/03/2011 22:23

I second the suggestion about Danbury park - it's a lovely school with a great headteacher. Nice village too - a few decent pubs, nice cafe, small library, small leisure centre, a few small shops, lovely country park etc. The school is definitely worth a look, but obviously pushes up prices in the cardinals area.

Someone mentioned a secondary school in ingrave. I think they meant ingatestone!

maggie75 · 23/03/2011 12:59

Thanks - we will def take a look at Danbury- the school choice will really lead us where we will end up, so great to hear of a good school in a lovely area. Will also take a look around Springfield schools.

Yes Maggie, do look at danbury. It's not far from Chelmsford and is truely lovely - I have brilliant memories of both living there and the school.

WalkTheWalk · 24/03/2011 18:32

We live in Essex and my kids attend school in Ingatestone.

The infants is separate to the juniors and the juniors is CofE with links to two local churches. We like the schools and have been really happy with the kids' education and the staff at both schools.

The senior school is also well regarded and has a good reputation locally.
Ingatestone is a nice village and there are several lovely villages in the vicinity.

Good luck with the move!

BrigitBigKnickers · 24/03/2011 19:41

Have you considered Billericay? All the primary and secondary schools are excellent. Both secondaries have outstanding sixth forms too.

Desperateforthinnerthighs · 25/03/2011 14:35

Maggie, I havent lived in Danbury for years but its got it all, the village green and duck pond, lol. library, lots of pubs, nice school and of course you have Danbury Lakes and Danbury common which are both fantastic............a gorgeous village....dam my mum and dad for moving, lol xx

maggie75 · 27/03/2011 15:05

Hi - thanks for all the replies. We've not had a chance to head to Danbury/Ingatstome this weekend - but will try for next weekend. Looking forward to seeing what they have to offer.

Hi All, also thinking of moving to Brentwood as I heard the schools are good. Pls any recommendations on schools (primary and secondary) and areas to live will be welcome as I believe the older posts are from years ago... currently living in cheshunt and not too happy with the local schools here

Thank you

We moved out to Shenfield having lived it central London.

The CofE and catholic schools usually do require church attendance and are usually heavily oversubscribed, so usually don’t get out of the church electoral roll into catchment, The very sought after C of E school here is St Mary’s. However, for admissions in 2020 and I heard this year also, children from within catchment but without church attendance were admitted. I understand that this was because they were low birth years, so possibly the same might apply for your children’s cohorts.

Generally, it seems that there are no bad schools in the area.

I ended up choosing to send my child to Long Ridings (the other side of Shenfield) as I felt it was a better fit for them. It’s non-religious with a large catchment area. I’m happy with the decision.

Someone’s mentioned Ingatestone infants and juniors upthread. Parents I know are happy there too.

Secondaries are thought to be good too. St Martin’s is well respected, Shenfield High getting better. Brentwood is also within area for Chelmsford grammar schools, which may be an attraction depending on your attitude.

It’s a great area to bring children up. Don’t be put off by the TOWIE stereotype. There are so many green spaces and woods, and there’s easy access to the sea. 5 minute cycle and you’re in proper countryside. Shenfield’s also on the fast line to Liverpool Street, so you can still get your fix of London life. Easy access to the M25, so you don’t have that much of a trek to get elsewhere. In the days when you could fly, really easy to pop across to Europe on a cheap flight out of Southend Airport.

Ingatestone is a little more villagey, and there are some proper villages not that far away, which are really quite charming.

Secnarf · 01/10/2021 21:39

I can also chat about Shenfield if either @maggie75 or @mfmr were interested in this specific area. However we are very much tied to the fast line into London, so it was the only area we looked at, so I can’t really make informed comparisons with other areas, except to say which villages look nice when you cycle through them.

mfmr · 01/10/2021 21:45

Thank you so much @Secnarf . I'm looking into Shenfield right now Smile

Secnarf · 03/10/2021 07:57

@mfmr

Is there anything in particular you wanted to know?

mfmr · 03/10/2021 08:03

@Secnarf

What good primary and secondary schools and maybe areas to avoid will be good to know.... I have a 3+ years old who would be starting school next year.
Are there nice parks, shopping centres etc, thank you again
