My first parents evening

DD is in reception and the first parents evening is coming up. I have no particular concerns about DD and I would think the teacher would have mentioned anything serious.

So what do I ask and what do I not ask Grin

Firstly I'd ask whether the teacher thinks she's enjoying school and has she made friends and who are her closest friends (good for play date ideas).

They should discuss the 6 areas of learning with you for Foundation Stage and how your DD is developing in each of those areas.

You oculd ask if there are any areas in which you could help her more at home.

Maybe ask how she gets on with getting changed for PE/behaves at the lunch table etc....

You don't have to ask anything. I ask if the parent has any questions, just to check there's no burning issue that needs the whole appointment to discuss. Nine out of ten times they don't. So I will talk about settling into the class, progress she has made and I might show you some samples of work. Don't feel you have to bombard the teacher with questions, we know how to fill the appointment time! :) Hopefully you'll enjoy it.

Panzee - I normally come out and remember I was supposed to ask certain questions but the teacher filled it with other stuff; stuff they felt was important (and of course it was)but then I ran out of time (10 mins) and felt as though I was rushed out.

Obviously it's not the same in all schools but last week, for example, there was no way either DS or DD's teachers were goign to tell me their levels for literacy and numeracy and only when I asked did they tell me. However, DD's teacher didn't even have her numeracy levels as she is taught by another teacher (poor planning for a parents evening I think). As we are moving schools in July, I needed to know.

I think the OP is just querying a few specific bits in case.
