Hi

DS is in yr1 and has in the past done football although he did not want to continue with it.

He is down to start beavers in sept which he is excited about.

I just think maybe he should be doing something else iyswim.

Just wondering what/how many activities a wk other yr1 kids do Smile

TIA.

DD1 (yr1) does dance club at school, gymnastics and badminton. She has recently given up formal swimming lessons as she was too tired, so I just take her myself now at the weekends.

DD (Yr 1) does Art club which is a free after school club. Only 6 weeks. She has just finished Dance after school club which was about 8 weeks.

DD (Reception) nothing til next year

Both DDs do Arabic school on a Saturday morning.

I am TRUELY shocked at how many activities you all do. How do you ferry your children around ? Do you not have other children ?
Are they not tired ? Most of the children at our school are cream crackered. they just want to slob infront of the tv.
But no, they have reading to do. And handwriting practice.
and then in year 2, you have literacy and maths homework every week, plus reading, plus spelling tests and handwriting practice. Ready for SATS.
Most kids do maybe one activity. Ds does Beavers on a monday. Karate on a thursday. And even I am wondering if this is too much for him.

I just wonder how you all do it. No one in our school does.

Swimming one afternoon, gymnastics class one morning

Oblomov that is exactly what I was thinking. I really don't know how people find the time. Between reading, writing, mathletics and spelling homeworks etc, cooking dinner, running the occasional errand and a little play there just isnt much time. The people I know whose children do after school activities on multiple days dont do any homework with their dcs - I guess something has to give!

Not in our school

just reading books every night and one piece of homework at the weekend
no one has mentioned sats at all

orienteerer · 22/03/2011 21:02

Yr 3 and only does activity on 2 afternoons (has homework Mon-Fri) plus rugby on a Sun.

' Between reading, writing, mathletics and spelling homeworks etc'

Really every night?!? I'd rather mine went to footie club or swimming!

Runoutofideas · 22/03/2011 21:46

We don't have any homework - just reading books. I'd rather they did the sporting activities after school, as, to me, that is what is lacking at school.

magicmummy1 · 22/03/2011 22:52

I'd hate to think of primary school kids having so much homework that they can't do anything else all week! As for activities, I think it really depends on the child. DD is in year 1 and is naturally a "joiner". She currently does the school sports club, rainbows, dance & acrobatics on saturdays & swimming on Sundays. I think she also does a couple of things in school at lunchtime like chess. She is desperate to add another dance class and also karate, but I have said no for the time being - a)because I think kids need time to just "be", and b) because I simply can't cope with the logistics of doing any more!

I have DD age 5, in reception and DS aged 6.5 in yr 2
Both DC go to afterschool club on mondays. DD does tap/ballet class Tuesdays. I work 4 days a week and Wednesdays are my day off so I collect them from school and we either go swimming (which DCs love) or visit a friend or invite friends for tea, Thursdays both kids do gymnastics then Fridays DS goes to beavers. Weekends are kept free for lie ins and they play while housework gets sorted or we go out with friends.

I am very lucky in that my mum collects the kids from school 3 days a week and takes them to their activities. If she wasn't able to do that then they wouldn't be able to do so much.
