Reading ... what should I expect from school?

Hi

Wondering if I could get some guidance on here about the kind of things which should be happening in Reception in terms of reading.

My DS started Reception in January. We were given a book bag and reading record book. We fill the book in and his books would be changed frequently. His teacher would also fill the book in with comments. However, his teacher left at half term and he has a new teacher now. Since the beginning of term his books have not changed and nothing has been written in his reading book.

We asked the teacher about this and she said that she doesn't sit with the children and read. It's something they are 'hoping to do at some point' Confused

Is this right? I would have thought that the teacher should sit with children and carry out some one to one reading to try and assess the reading level? Or am I expecting too much?

Thanks for any input .......

It takes a while to get to know a class and their abilities. so maybe a week or two before books go out possibly.

do they do group/guided reading?

have you asked whether you can help yourself to the next book?

What is the school policy on changing books?

is there another reception class in the school tht are getting their books chaanged?

Both my chldren were read with daily at reception level unless something more exciting was happening eg Christmas play, world book day, red nose day, french day, a parent visiting to talk about another culture, Chinese New Year.......

DD1 went though 1-3 books a week, DD2 4 books a week (they don't read on a Thursday as its swimming day). However, they were both in really small classes.

Hi

They don't do group reading or guided reading. We can help ourselves to the next book, but DS doesn't do it ..... I tell him to change it but it goes in one ear and out the other. He attends breakfast and after school club so I don't have access to change books.

The other 2 reception classes are having one on one reading and getting books changed / commented on.

He is only in Foundation Stage and like I say he only started in January so I'm not sure what I should be expecting.

I think regular reading with pupils is a vital part of reception - getting reading on track is key to setting up for the next year's work. If you have finished his books, they should give you new ones, but definitely should be reading with him in class.
You can cover home reading from the library, but school need to do their part too. Am totally with you.
