'continuous provision' - in year 6?

Just heard my DS talking about their class doing 'continuous provision'. What on earth... googled it and it looks like an early years idea. Headteacher is really into independent learning and sells it to parents. DS said today that teachers are there to facilitate and pupils are expected to find out answers/things for themselves - ie on computer.

I hate it, but I know fans will say, 'pupils mustn't be spoonfed and the teachers will direct them if they're not working or have the wrong idea'. I can't wait for him to leave frankly. Any opinions?

Doesn't sound like a bad thing to be honest. It's probably part of preparing them for senior school - they certainly won't get spoonfed then!

Our school does a fair amount of 'independent learning' - I think it's an idea that is proven to work..

As a teacher who left the UK sick of the constant headaches caused by "continuous provision" (or as it seems from my point of view - "running wild"), I would say; aaarrrgghhh!!

probably over-reacting. Legacy's right. It's just that leaving kids to work it out/child centred learning can be a recipe for boredom too.

It depends on how well it is managed by the individual school/teacher. But certainly an important skill that they will need for Yr 7. You just need to get the balance right.
