Reception age writing?

Ok so there is a lot of stuff about reading for reception.

DS has learnt quite a few of his sounds that he has for homework, he reads a good few tricky words and now he is trying to sound out with his writing.

What I am wondering is in which year do they start to demonstrate writing sentences? He can make some words up using his phonics and is trying to write a sentence. He draws a lot, every spare minute, and is now trying to put words to it all. I was thinking perhaps I could explain finger spaces go after each word he has sounded out, is it worth me getting him to do a few spellings of high frequency words so he can express himself a little more with his writing. He's a creative little one and seems keen so I want to help him.

Thanks in advance.

What sort of things would be recommended to start with? Thanks

My son is in reception and they do writing at school. They are encouraged to write sentences at school and have covered full stop and finger spaces. If your son has very little fingers a finger space may be inadequate.

Spelling isn't important at this age so I wouldn't bother with spelling other than his name.

This picture/writing paper is great if your son likes drawing. It is just a few widely spaced lines for writing below the picture.Fine to encourage him to write sentences in reception IMO.

If he is interested in writing I would start with a caption for his pictures with him writing the sounds he can hear in the words he wants to write

Thank you. Will try the sounding out.

He absolutely loves drawing. He's spent the last year perfecting his usual characters etc (no parental input just always had paper and pens at the table) and he's starting to look like he's being creative with writing (and reading) like he does his drawings so I just figure link it all up if he enjoys it. It's certainly something that he owns for himself which is really nice.

Would he enjoy making a comic strip with speech bubbles?

That's a great idea. I think he would. He's done a couple of pics off of his own back and done speech bubbles (normally help me as the caption for his princess!). This would definitely help him with creating beginning, middle and end to a story etc.

Thanks again.
