Top tips to get your DC dressed for School

Hi all,

My DD (age 7) is a complete nightmare at getting dressed for school in the morning.

Today I decided to reward her with 10p for each day she gets dressed by herself by 7.30am (including hair, teeth, wash etc) and for every day she doesnt, she loses 10p.

Amazingly Wink this bribery method has worked. 10p is now in her new money box. I know its only day 1 - but we have success. Yay!

Tell me about your tips?

PJs. Did it once with DD1 and the rest (and her) never bothered to try and test again. Evil parenting works. Grin

My eldest is not a morning person! She will not be ready before 8am which is the time we need to leave, no matter how early we wake her.

We're currently staying with my parents so they need to leave at 8am to get her to school on time, leave at 8am and she can join morning club, leave at 8:10am and she's going in through the office.

The longest part for us is breakfast (if only school had a breakfast club!) and usually in the time it takes her to eat one bowl (every day she's convinced I'm going to let her have two bowls...) her baby sister has woken up and finished her breakfast.

This week we've started racing Nanny and her sister. The other day it looked like Nanny was winning so she said "Look Nanny! There's a penguin in the garden!" and when Nanny ran to the back window she said "Are you sure it's not in the front?" Mum keeps coming out in different states of dress and saying "I'm ready!" "But Nanny, you've got a towel on!" which usually speeds her up.

Day 2 Success.

DD is going to make a reward chart and stick on her 10p's with blue tack.
As she doesnt have pocket money - I think this is a great way to introduce it.

Also, as we are checking the time, DD is using maths to work out how much time she has left to get ready.

Yay!

sounds fab!

(P.S. I have also taken DS2 to school in his pj's. Once was enough. Also had uniform in carrier bag, as the playground in your ben-tens would have been a bit chilly round your nethers...I've never seen a child put clothes on so fast, and in the back of a car at that. Only needed to do it once.)

Its a very slick operation for us in the mornings. We have everything ready the night before - lunch boxes, uniforms, my clothes,swimming/PE bag etc.

Mine get up with the alarm at 7am, get changed (little one with my help) and do hair. At 7.30 they quickly lay table while i get changed, we have breakfast together. 8.00am we do a bit of homework for half an hour and then at 8.45 go to school. We have little time for anything after school due to clubs/seeing friends/relaxing/making tea/perparing for the following day.

We don't have TV in the mornings - and i use screen time as a reward in the evenings.

Have clothes ready the night before or easily accessible, depending on age of children.
They get dressed before coming downstairs or no breakfast. Have a sponge ready or keep jumpers off to the last minute. Bring reading book down with them and anything else they need.
Set of toothbrushes and toothpaste in the kitchen/downstairs loo. No returning upstairs after breakfast. If they've forgotten something, tough.
No TV or computer or anything electronic in the morning. They can play if there's any free time.

Mine are older now (12 and 9) and DS1 wakes between 6.45 and 7, gets up around 7 and is out by 7.30 so no time for anything.

ohh CointreauVersial and Cece I thought i was the only one who was as mean as this. I have done both of those things out of door in socks and PJ's. Only had to do it once. it definately did work.

I got my DD to write a detailed list of the things she had to do in what order, it's on the magnet board next to her bed. Last item is (at my suggestion) "no stairing into space". It kind of worked for a while but she has been slacking lately, might try doing it again and attatching some incentive. She is 6.
