I was just wondering what other prep schools do in respect of SATS.

DS is 7 and before February half term, he came home and told us that they would be doing 'special work' for Mrs Headmistress. They were 'tested' on

Reading
Mental Maths
Dictation
PE
Comprehension
Unaided Story
Art
Design & Technology
Music
ICT

The scores were calculated and we were given a report with the average score with a detailed teacher report on each aspect.

I wanted to find out if this is the same in other prep schools.

The dc's school don't so SATS. they sit internal assessments every year and the results are reported in nice easy to understand percentages with a Grade for effort & one for achievment.

Sounds about the same although we had fancy graphs to go with the scores!

Our schools uses Durham University's PIPs testing so children are compared to an average in the school and a national average. These are assessed in class and the children don't know they are being assessed. Once they get into year 3 they get marks each half of term for effort and achievement.

Lizcat -- have you ever been told your child's PIP results? Our school uses the PIP tests but never discusses results with parents. Apparently they use them to measure the children's progress from year to year. Seems a bit odd to me they don't share the information with parents.

Yes we have been told the standardised for age Pips results and in particular cases how that equated to number of questions answered correctly.

the academic stuff seems to be the same as SATs. In state schiools the children are given a level for the other subjects that you mention at the end of the key stage but levels are only given to parents for maths science ,reading ,writing and speaking and listening.Having friends with children in both sectors i would say on the whole state parents seem to be more informed about results at this age, i d on't know why this would be

CATs abnd Pips - we review the results of our child relative to the year group against how they are performing in class. they don't cover the same as op describes - vr , non vr, mental maths and literacy.
