Yr2 SATs - please educate me!

I have a few questions about KS1 SATs if anyone can enlighten me please.

  • Is it still compulsory for kids to sit the formal tests or is it the school who want the kids to do them?
  • What relevance do the results have? Are they only for the government's and school's benefit to track performance?
  • Why do parents get hung up on the results, buying practice papers and worrying about it all?
-is there any benefit to the child getting a high KS1 score in later life? I'd have though surely their score should reflect what they are capable of without cramming and worrying about taking a day off sick if needed.

Shock At you being asked to buy books.

Our school is very academic, scores highly in the league tables, usually has very high Sats at YR2 and YR6.

But we have never been asked to buy books or practise with our children in YR2. I've yet to experience YR6 though!

We do have a set period in May when they do the written assessments, but I only know that because I've been through it already. They make no mention of it to parents, and all we get is the slip with the results confirming the teachers assessments when we get school reports in July!

If I had been asked to buy books and do questions at home I would be asking the teacher why. Ds is in yr 2 but I don't think he is doing any tests this year. His school doesn't do SATs but I'm not sure if they do an alternative.

Is it an independent school then, Mollie?

MollieO · 06/03/2011 20:36

Yes. Thus thread has me wondering what testing, if any, they do. I'll ask at our forthcoming parents' evening.

Buying books Shock. I'm also surprised there's been two parents evenings too!

Our school is the same as mankyscotslass, there's no mention of it until you get shown the results in July. The children also have no idea - my dc never really know they'd done them, they were just excited about going into a different room for a short while!

But no-one ever knows the SAT test results Oblo (except the teacher)! The only reported levels are those that the teachers have given the children. Governors and parents will see these.

The school should not be worried about the children's performance on the test papers at all.

A parent may ask to see a paper, but the teacher would justifu any questions with classwork, not the test paper.
