reading vs writing in reception

Can anyone tell me a bit about how reading and writing connect in the reception and Y1 curriculum? My child is (at 5.4 in recep) learning individual sounds & sounding out, tho doesn't want to try reading. He likes writing though and I don't think they do much at school - ie he wants to write whole words. He does lots of this at home but since starting school has gone back to only writing in capitals; should I encourage him to use lower case too/instead, or is all caps ok at this stage? Not sure how or when it is taught.

It can vary from school to school (so there is no definitive answer best to ask the teacher) but in general schools teach children to only use capitals at the beginning of sentences and for names. He should be taught correct letter formation alongside learning the sounds represented by each letter. Good phonics teaching also involves learning how to "sound out" (blend) words for reading and how to "chop up" (segment) words for spelling.

DD is in reception and it seems there is a lot of focus on both Reading and writing. They have a special writing area and DD does a lot of writing (or at least she comes home with lots of bits of writing stuffed into her book bag Grin.

They are definitely taught that capital letters are used at the beginning of sentences and not for all words.
