We do it every week day, sometimes over weekend. Dd's school change books every day if read.

LoisSanger · 21/02/2011 22:37

Depends. Used to do it every day but have slipped a bit recently. DD will sometimes read all her books (she gets a few at a time) and then other days doesn't want to read any. We can change her books when we want to.

PoppetUK · 21/02/2011 23:02

DS only gets 1 or 2 books per week. He reads them twice normally. On the other nights I pull out either a book to read, one for me to read to him or both. Depends how tired we all are.

NancyDrewHadaClue · 21/02/2011 23:06

Average week, probably twice per week. DS is not that bothered and so I don't want to force it but is quite into his spellings so we concentrate on that.

he gets a bed time story every night though.

evolucy7 · 21/02/2011 23:21

My DDs get a book every day and we read it every night.

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 21/02/2011 23:49

We read to and with DD every night but we only get a book once a week from school (we read her home story books if there isn;t anyh from school).

Having said that, often she wont read the school books but will read the home ones (the school ones are boring according to her!)

HollyPatz · 22/02/2011 12:24

My twins read every night, we have a game where we'll each read a page, but like the mum above, she refuses to read school books! I don't think this is a big deal though as all reading is education, right??

mankyscotslass · 22/02/2011 12:28

We read with him, and have him read to us every day.

At bed time he usually has two stories, one we take turns reading some of, and one that's purely for us to read to him as his bed time story.

He usualyl comes up to us at different times with a book that he wants us to rread to him, and we usually get him to read some of that too.

We read his school reading book when he gets it, usualy changed twice a week.

Help Your Child to Read - A Guide to Understanding & Reinforcing School Teaching Methods at Home

This guide has been written by a parent for anybody who has children in Reception or Infant Classes at school. It includes an introduction to helping your child to read, an outline of methods of teaching reading in primary schools and suggestions of ways to reinforce these methods at home.Find it on hernhillforum.wordpress.com

Feenie · 22/02/2011 17:22

Was this guide written by you, by any chance mizzmizz? You've made your first six posts today, all recommending the same site.

MizzMizz · 22/02/2011 17:33

Yes, it was. We get no information from our school about how they teach reading, and I have searched the internet for a similar guide, but came up with nothing - so I wrote it myself to share with other parents at school. Then I thought it might be useful to others so decided to use mumsnet spread the word. Was this a wrong thing to do?

MizzMizz · 22/02/2011 17:39

...and wanted to see if people thought it was helpful.

mrz · 22/02/2011 17:40

It helps to honest MizzMizz

incidentally the first page is on the BBC parents site {grin}

MizzMizz · 22/02/2011 17:42

None of it is original - just put together in a way that I hope is accessible and useful.

mrz · 22/02/2011 17:48

I'm sure some parents will be very grateful
good luck

IndigoBell · 22/02/2011 17:54

this was a site in your guide I hadn't stumbled across before - Easy novels for struggling readers.

Thanks. If DD ever makes a reading age of 7, I will def buy some books from there for her....

Feenie · 22/02/2011 17:55

It's good advice actually, mizzmizz.

MizzMizz · 22/02/2011 17:57

Thank you! If I have helped only one other parent, it was worth doing!x

mrz · 22/02/2011 18:01

Were you afraid we'd say it was rubbish if you took credit? Grin

MizzMizz · 22/02/2011 18:03

Didn't know what I was doing to be honest.

dikkertjedap · 22/02/2011 18:31

We read every day of the week. DD reads her book and then I either read or tell her a story. In the Holidays and weekends we read more. It is easy, because she loves books and stories.

blackeyedsusan · 22/02/2011 20:03

school books once maybe twice(they get changed once a week)We read other books nearly everyday.

MrsDaffodill · 22/02/2011 21:18

Try to aim for every day. Realistically more like 4 - 5 days a week. Gets a bedtime story from us every though.

MadameGazelle · 22/02/2011 22:43

Thanks MizzMizz, DS is in Reception and this guide is really useful Smile

MizzMizz · 23/02/2011 09:05

That's great - thank you!
