Am pg with baby due end of June early July-panic?!

I am also married to a very capable man born at end of July so I guess I shouldn't worry, but so much talk of struggling summer babes I am! I am also a teacher and when I was teaching it really wasn't especially on my radar when my class came in the year so maybe by end of ks2 where I mostly taught it's okay. But what with the hormones and excessive mumsnet reading I am a little worried. Will it be okay? Guess it saves me worrying about how dd and ds will adapt to no.3.....!

Perhaps you should try to stop worrying about it, after all there is nothing you can do about it! Hmm

If you are a teacher you are perfectly placed to give any assistance if necessary.

I have a 4 year old in Reception, with a late May birthday, who works with the Y1 children and a 3 year old with a mid May birthday who works with Reception. I do not believe that simply having a late birthday will mean that a child will struggle.

Yes, too late for useful worrying! And the birthday parties could be more outdoorsy than the winter ones we have just now!

Don't worry...even if to start with it makes a difference it all evens out quite quickly. DS2 was born on 24 August (he was early) and he is in the top groups for literacy and numeracy in Yr1 and is targeted for at least 2bs by the end of the year Grin. Sorry for slight gloating....
So it is not the end of the world!!!

The children in my Y4 class who find school hardest are those born in September and October.

It might make a difference in the early days but that's no real surprise; some of the children in the same class will be able to crawl/walk before your child is born. However, it does seem to level out in the end.

One of the most capable children I taught was an August baby who had been born at 28 weeks Shock. She'd had to overcome a lot more than her date of birth and was still in the top quarter of the class, across all subjects.

It will depend upon your child. Don't panic.

I agree. I have 2 May dc and they can definately hold their own in their respective classses. The late May one more than early May one.

BlooCowWonders · 19/02/2011 20:16

dc3 has Aug 27th birthday :) and I willed her to come earlier than her Sept due date Grin And guess what - she's fine!!! 2nd smallest in the class but makes up for it in stubborness.

I think mums of summer borns worry too much, but when they're 2 or 3 it seems like a huge difference, much more so than at 4 even.

But agree that you could be wasting as much time on sibling rivalry, or all fitting into the car, or trying to plan a holiday for a family of 5 or any other worries. But your hormones will choose your worry for you - sorry!

My July baby has lovely Summer birthday parties in the garden and has started Secondary School in all the top sets.

I am September born and worried unnecessarily about when she was due.

In our class, there are Autumn kids (I hate saying 'Autumn babies' or whatever as they are not babies anymore!) who are in the bottom group and summer borns in the top group.

Ds is a late June birthday and is 'top of the class' in several areas. I do think it matters a bit more with sport if they're a bit little for their age anyway but even then it doesn't matter much.

The point is that yes on average it could be there's a slight difference due to age initially but it's not necessarily the case and definitely not worth worrying about!

spanieleyes · 19/02/2011 20:44

Youngest son was Autumn born. Although he WAS a late starter and didn't begin to read at all until Yr 1 he was straight level 3's at yr 2,level 5's at yr 6, passed the 11+ , 11 GCSE's at A* and A and currently doing A levels in early Modern History, Maths, Law and Politics. ( and I'm a teacher too!)
( OK that was a proud boast, but hey!)

My November born kids are bored stiff in class (admittedly only second year of preschool). I'm really glad my next one is going to be July.

chatworth · 19/02/2011 21:03

Exactly Schmee - I think myself lucky that Ds is summer born. This sounds obnoxious but I think he'd be even further ahead if he were Autumn born and it would be more problematic.

DS1 birthday in may and is doing v well in reception, reading one of best.... don't worry about it yet!
