Cost of school diners

I am new to mumsnet and this topic will be somewhere but I've not found it yet. I have just found out that out of the £1.90 I pay for school diners only 65pence goes on food. I am shocked and worked out in my area (Lancashire County Council) they supply diners to 483 primary schools. If only 100 chidren in each school took school diners, the council would take £91,000 but only spend £31,00 on childrens food per day! Also the representative told the parent forum they 'like to ulk the children up on bread'!!!!!!! How do I stop this! (thankyou)

£2.10 and tiny portions with sacks being sent home for the chickens. Generally salads and peas left over, but today a whole tray of chips. Have rarely seen worse chips - all white and floppy.

£2.05 a day here in London we can't afford them so send in a pack lunch at least that way I know what shes eaten and its healthy.

2.10 in Staffs - and they're awful. I know as I went to the parents lunch. My Dad went to Grandparents lunch and says he's taking a packed lunch next time!!! Both mine have a packed lunch except on the coldest days when I like them to have a hot dinner - amazingly enough they quite like them!!

I'm a TA working at a school in the OP's Local Authority. And am also a mum who's more than happy to spend the £1.90 on her childs lunch each day.

I have to say the lunches smell absolutly fantastic and I always wish I could stay and join in. There are quite a number of wefare staff involved in catering for those on school meals. I can imagine the wage bill is pretty high. Even on minimum wage you need 3 children to eat to cover just 1 hour for every member of staff.

£2.20 Primary School, Northern Ireland

Ours are £2 and my two love them - all made on the premises.

£2 here (SE London). That covers a choice of hot meal and pudding cooked on the premises everyday. Catering is done by a private company who have a local sourcing policy (can't remember the exact figures but it was something like all food is sourced within 20 miles of the school). They have a new menu every term to reflect seasonal produce. They also hold 'open lunchtimes' every now and again where parents can join their children for school dinner - you have the same as they do and they don't put on anything special becuase it comes from the set menu. Hot meals are eg roast dinner, lasagne, fish and chips, curry, chilli con carne. I'm glad the dinner service is as good as it is as I just don't have time to make packed lunches.

Ours are £2 a day and they are excellent.

I know because I have been to have one more than once and also worked/helped in oth schools.

Lots of food too - eg lasagne, veg, potatoes, salad bar (as much as you like) and pudding (seconds available too).

Mind you sometime soon it looks like we will be switching to meals made elsewhere and heated up, not cooked on the premises by the lovely catering staff Sad

Doubt if the price will go down Hmm

£2.20 here in North London. We go through spats of packed and school lunches, depending on who else is on the packed/school lunch tables. Greatly improved lundces since dd started reception (she is now 11), but I do see her putting on weight, which she doesn't need, when on school lunches.

RiojaLover75 · 18/02/2011 23:03

£2.10 here in South East Sad

SE13Mummy · 19/02/2011 12:55

£1.40 in Lewisham although it's going up to £1.60 after Easter.

DD loves them and I love that she eats well at lunchtime.

I used to have school dinners (at the same school) once a week when I taught the Reception class...I was pregnant and starving, the dinners were delicious!
