I think it's great that you all listen to your children read, and actively encourage them to take pleasure in the activity.
I'm a year 4 teacher, and the cohort of my school is very different. The parents, on the whole, are very poorly educated. Generally, the mothers can't read, write or speak English, and they are illiterate in their home language too. The fathers tend to be the communuicators, but their literacy skills are also poor. Most of the families have fled war torn countries, so it's not surprising their education was poor.
What I do object to, and I agree with Ferguson on this, is that many parents don't want to bother with their children's education. They see that as being exclusively the teacher's job, and some of them downright discourage their children from homework and reading.
I know that's a general 'reading' rant, not really about the best timing to read, but I just wanted to say that there is a huge spectrum of parents' interest in their children's education, but good on the parents here who do give a shi... ahem
