I must say I think it is refreshingly positive after hearing about a friend's school that sends home SIX books a week!!

In Reception and Year 1, that is pretty much all they get at our primary. They might have a shapes colouring-in sort of maths worksheet, or a few sums on a sheet, but none of it takes more than 30 minutes a week.

Some parents are up in arms about it!

Twonks.

What year? My DS is in Y1 and has no formal reading/homework.

Just a reading diary and you can write in it as little/often as you like.

I am delighted that they have recognised that some 5/6 year olds just don't enjoy reading so there is no pressure.

We do get an occasional work sheet if they are doing a particular topic but it is about twice per half term and very clearly states that it is not compulsory.

yay for no homework!

My ds gets 4 reading books a week in year 1, aswell as 10 spellings to learn and 1 maths homework sheet. Some of the reading books come with a comprehension sheet and occasionally there will be some topic related worksheet to do at the weekend!

I had a Y1 parent ask for 30 books! He didn't get them from me but another teacher gave him a huge pile Angry. The next day he returned 7 books and an exhausted child... he'd spent 2 hours reading them!

We get the same as you hackingandhewing. Thank goodness because it is hard enough getting my daughter to do her reading every night. They don't need homework at this age

We dont get homework at all other than be expected to listen to our child read, and use maths in our daily lives.

Teachers feel its a waste of time and only for the benefit of parents.

I am old (48) and old fashioned, but I really am sad that children aged 4 to 11 are set any homework at all! Other than reading, I suppose, at a push.

DD in reception has Reading books but you change them as and when you want. No other homework.

DS in year 2 has Reading books as a nd when they are read. Sone spellings (about 10) a week and a piece of homework that takes about 15-20 min to do. Seems ok to me (and to him)

hackingandhewing, magdalene and RoadArt Do the school send books home for the reading diary or do you have to source your own? If they send books home how often is it or do you have to change them yourselves? Was it the same for reception as well?

Different schools and teachers have different policies about reading books

Our current school still send homes books every day for the younger children, but they dont consider this as "homework". It is something that children should all need to do.

The older kids go to the library every week and choose their own books, and also read a lot of books whilst in the class.

I work in an infant school. There is no homework, no spellings tests, etc. And reading is optional. No books are sent home. It is up to parents and chldren to chose their own books from the bande boxes int he classroom.

I actually think the reading should be more structured personally, and more regularly. Would like to ee most children reading every day, or at least most days. It does make a difference ime.

DD's school had more homework, but not as much as mny schools - daily reading (5 mins) and up to 10 min homework a night in infant. In Y4 now and is expected to read daily and do between 10-20 mins homework most nights. Sometimes it is more, sometimes none.
