What's a Gifted and Talented Programme?

And does every school have one?

When I was visiting primary schools, I heard some parents asking the Heads about this.
Then, another Mum yesterday mentioned that she wanted to ask our local school about their policy on this.

Just wondered what it was and whether it should be something I should know about?
(Don't think my DD is particularly gifted or talented though Grin)

Not every school has one, and you should not be at all concerned about it.

Most of the kids on g&t aren't gifted or talented - but it gives the parents huge bragging rights.
What you want is a school that caters for all it's children.

Schools used to have to put the top 10% (or may be a different figure) onto a G&T register

Didnt really make sense as you may have a spectacularly ordinary year with no-one really G&T but some kids put on there to tick a box, then an amazingly talented year with very gifted kids NOT being put on, cos they already had their 3 talented ones....

It isnt compulsory anymore, so some schools dont bother

take absolutely NO notice of g and t programme.

Am with indigo on this.

And my reason for the above is that ds is on it, and there is no rhyme or reason for his being there believe me.

The National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth, which offered extra support for gifted children in state schools was scrapped in February 2010.

well gawd knows why I get a letter each term that certain children who are gifted and talented get to do extra activities and mine is one of them.

Maybe they don't have a register but just do their own thing? This is a state primary. tbh I hve never taken any notice of it.

My DS was on it, for drama Confused

I'm not sure being dramatic makes you good at drama but I think they needed to fill their quota. Stpid thing was, it meant he got extension maths and english work. Work that one out!

Thanks everyone for the explanation, and thanks for the link to Guardian article meditrina.

TBH - I was a bit embarrassed yesterday when the other Mum brought it up because I'm actually a school governor and I'd never heard of it. All makes sense now as it's very likely the school where I'm a governor doesn't have a G&T scheme as it has a very inclusive approach.

Our local authority runs G&T Saturday sessions.

Every so often my child goes on one. I can't really see the benefit - I would rather have a Saturday together.
