why do I bother? (Brick walls and heads)

It's parents evening tomorrow.

Should I bother to raise reading yet again? (green band at home/ pink band at school dilema) Not getting enough of the story from the pictures apparently. Should I just leave it and rely on you lovely lot to keep me updated and carry on teaching her at home? If I do say something what should I say? Should I just stop banging my head against this brick wall of inflexibility?

I did wonder about going in really concerned about her confidence at school to read as an approach.

Point 2. IEP dd has difficulty with forming letters because the ot says she can't plan the movements in her head. The iep has listed needing warm up exercises and hanwriting activities. (good) Should it also include provision for composing using the computer so that they can assess her spelling/ phonics separately from her handwriting?

Is she in reception? Def don't move her on to a computer before she absolutely has to (Say Y5 or Y6). It's far more important that she learns how to write correctly rather than that her spelling being assessed at that age.....

WRT to her reading, you could just say are very pleased with how well she is reading at home, and she is really enjoying 'green eggs and ham' (or whatever).

Hi, That's interesting. I have the exact same problem. Teacher says my dd is not showing in school what I say she can do at home. You might have seen my thread before about my dd (in Jan) was not given a reading book cause teacher said she cannot match character names with pictures when my dd had been doing this at home since September. I mentioned it to the teacher and she said my dd not demonstrating it in school. However the day after that she came home with a reading book....! I asked to speak to the teacher and she was very defensive and negative. I am also wondering how to approach this (parent meeting coming up in March) Are they divided in to groups of ability in your daugther's school? Try and ask open ended questions and avoid putting words in the teachers' mouth (like I did).When I asked 'why do you think she is not showing what she can do in school etc is she not confident' teacher couldn't wait to tell me how dd lacked confidence, never put hand up etc. Even though this is very out of character for my dd. Good luck. Know how you feel.

I wouldn't mind so much if the teacher said she couldn't do it at school and what she needed to practise. I have come across that before from the other side, it is not uncommon. It's the lack of a real/clear explanation that bothered me and not knowing whether the teacher has even tried her on a harder book. Yes, I will ask her to explain what she is looking for with respect to not getting enough from the pictures and use Indigo's comment too about the library books she brings home from school. I will have to write it down and rehearse as I forget so easily when ds is squawking in the pushchair!(How is the cvc blending going Indigo?)

ha back from parents evening. she can't have a new book because she will not talk about the pictures in any detail at school. It is frustrating but not a lot I can do about it. (Other than what I am doing already) I did have a bit of a nose at the reading books at school and the books of the same bookband level at school are longer, a lot longer than the ones she reads from the library. Anyway, we will carry on reading at home, working on extending her sentences when she is talking about the story and trying to increase the length of the books she is reading, whilst not losing the comprehension.

I am giving myself a good talking too about confidence coming in time. At least she says her language is really good when playing and that she knows the answers when asked questions. oh well. stop moaning and get on with it!

Very interesting.

They are assessed on reading, writing and speaking in literacy. And maybe they just want to 'improve' her speaking before stretching her with reading.....

Speaking well is a very important skill, and pretty much the foundation for being able to survive in a classroom......
