How secure does secure in Level xxx mean

At what stage do teachers class a child as being secure at a particular level?

Lets say secure Level 4 as an example

Does that mean the child has to be able to answer all questions at 4b, or at 4a or would the child need to be answering some level 5c questions.

Is it all areas of maths that you would mark a level including data, measures, shapes etc?

i think i means that the child has demonstrated in class several times that they can do each and every one of the targets within the sub-level. e.g. if its about using capital letters correctly, then the teacher has seen evidence of this in various pieces of work.

Begin with the assessment guidelines for Ma2 Number.
Look at the criteria within each AF. Decide which level describes the pupil best.
Record the level for each AF in the appropriate box.
Record 'insufficient evidence' (IE) if you do not know enough about this aspect of the pupil's mathematics to make a judgement. This has implications for planning.
If you feel the pupil is operating below the level, check the criteria on the assessment guidelines for the level below.
Now make your level decision for Ma2 Number.
Your assessment focus judgements give an impression of the best-fit level for Ma2.
Read the complete level descriptions for both levels to confirm your impression of the best fit level for Ma2.
Decide whether the level is Low, Secure or High. Do this by thinking about what the pupil demonstrates.
How much of the level?
How consistently?
How independently?
In what range of contexts?
Tick the relevant Low, Secure or High box for the level.
Repet for MA1,MA3 and MA4

Simples!
Now all you have to do is to repeat the process 29 more times, do this 3 times a term and provide the evidence for your opinions and hey presto, you have a level for your class

I was about to say 3B or 4B is secure whereas a 3C or 4C means just reaching some of the points in that level.

But I see, Spaniel is doing her APP. Wink

spanieleyes · 15/02/2011 20:33

How did you guess! I'm surrounded by maths books, science books ( as we need evidence across a range of subjects) APP grids, exemplification guidance and brightly coloured pens, which are the only things to keep me sane!

Glad to be out of it, tbh. Although now facing the joy of what to do about childcare during holiday time.

And they say teachers have an easy life!

Thank you Spanieleyes for your help.

One last question, assuming you have done all this, and have your various levels under each MA, do you then average the scores, for example
MA2, 3 at C, 6 at B, 7 at A
(This is just guessing numbers, not accurate)

Number has a 5x weighting, Using and Applying 2x, Shape and Space 2x and Data Handling 1x.

'Tis here

Thanks Feenie

Just off to do some calculations now....
