Maths levels in year 4

My son has been assessed as working at Level 3c but I am convinced the work he is doing is too easy for him. I am going to see his teacher tomorrow and want to know what is the national average? Is he higher or lower? He has always worked at the higher level in his class previously and I noticed he has been put in the other group. I am now worried he has been grouped where he is at the top end of a group that is essentially easy for him rather than in the higher group working to a Level 4 which he can do but has just slipped out of achieving on paper. I want him stretched not dumbing down. How should I approach his teacher who is already spitting feathers about evidence!!!

There isn't an average for Y4 - expected levels at Y2 and Y6 are 2b and 4b respectively, so most schools call 3b where a child should be at the end of Y4 - so 3c now (half way through) is probably where a typical Y4 child should be.

If you take an "average" year 2 to be a 2b then at the end of year 3 you could be 3c if you make 2 sublevels progress a year.
I teach year 4 and think a 3c would be a bit behind where they need to be to get a 4b in year 6 BUT.. I don't compare children against the "average"...to me it is about progress and I have known some children to make a whole level in a single year!
I would ask the teacher to tell you what on the APP assessment does your son need to work on to progress to a the next sublevel. The APP grids are all on the primary framework website if you want to look in advance. Hope that helps

3c is a long way from a 4. It goes 3c, 3b, 3a, 4c.

Is this literacy or numeracy?

If he is quite able at maths I would be worried. Ds1 started y4 at 3a I think (can't quite remember, could have been 4c) and ended on 4a - he is loves maths though & has always been in the top set. ds2 apparently got 3b in Y2 but at the same time a lot of ds1's y4 classmates got 3b - they definitely weren't considered higher level at maths though
