Yawning

Hi,

Hope someone can offer me some advise. My DS is Y1 term 2, and is doing ok with reading I think, he is in the process of moving from ORT 4 to ORT 5, during this transision his teacher had moved him onto Ginn books, i think to reaffirm some sounding techniques. Now i know some aren't keen on ORT, but my son actually likes them, but he definately hates these Ginn books which have no real excitment or story and really only concentrate on sounding and rhyming. The last few nights the teacher has commented in his reading book that he is yawning whilst reading to her, and losing concentration (never had anything like that before). To be honest i think its because he's not motivated and bored with them, he keeps asking when he can go onto the next set of Kipper books???

What can i do, do you think i should tell the teacher, do you think she will say that he has to go through this process before next stage. IT's not motivating him, to me these books are having a negative effect.

Any thoughts??

go to the library and get him some proper books to read...

We have a stack of books in the house, which he loves reading and looking at, and we do go to the library, but what do i put in his reading book each night about the Ginn book, do i say we read XYZ instead as DS doesn't like the Ginn book??

I would tell the teacher. Maybe she will let him do some 'magic key' books or find a different range of books that your ds will find interesting. I think a teacher will not mind you saying anything as no one will want to put your son off reading through boredom.

No harm in that - if he's not enjoying them let them know then maybe they can come up with an alternative reading scheme that he will like.

Yes I agree. Let your teacher know that you think the Ginn books are not "catching his interest" as much as ORT. Does she have any other books at his level that might be better for him. She can only say no if there aren't any, but as a teacher I would like the feedback! I agree actually that Ginn 360 books are deathly!

If you want to look at some reading scheme books yourself that tie in with ORT levels but seem to be particularly interesting for boys, you could look at "Project X" books. Sometimes you can pick up packs of these fairly cheaply on Amazon, Ebay or places like Red House.

Hi we bought a box set of Project X from The Book people - £50 worth of books for £10! The books are designed to interest boys who find most reading schemes of little interest. They are published by Oxford University Press - same as the Kipper/Chip/Floppy books. Just like us, not every child enjoys the same books, and it's a shame to put them off reading just because they HAVE to read their way through the ones in the school bookcase!

Thanks very much, I really appreciate your feedback will speak to teacher tonight, and will certainly look out for Project X books
