End of year 1

I am trying to find out what children are expected to be able to do in numeracy, phonics and literacy by the end of year 1. Thanks.

why? I am not being silly. It is just that there is such a large range that knowing that your child can do (or not) the things listed at level 1a tells you nothing about the school or your child. My guess is that a good percentage of my ds's class are working at level 2b or 2c already. A few are even at level 2a or 3 for some things. A good percentage are at level w (reception level basicaly). The number of children on level 1b (the level "expected" at this stage) for everything is tiny

The most important thing is that your child is doing things that stretch her but are not too far out of her comfort zone so that she gets put off

He is doing well and he is happy at school but i am interested to know what he should be up to because i get no information from him and little from school apart from to say he is fine.
I know that should be enough and it is but he is my PFB, and i suppose i just wanted to know.

BeGood - it's not that simple. There is no Year 1 syllabus.

The gov expects all students to reach a level 2b by the end of year 2. Approx 90% of students will do so. Approx 30% of students will reach a level 3.

So your child is currently working at a level, and his teacher will be trying to get him to move up to the next level.

If a child is to get a 2b by the end of Y2 they would normally need to be a 1b by the end of Y1.

You can look up what is in each level, but really it's very generic and teacher speak and not very helpful.

Are you concerned that your child is behind, and you would like to offer extra support? Or are you asking for some other reason?

I don't think the OP's questions is so strange, as all parents want their child to be OK, at least average, however some schools don't seem to give you any more information than fine - and some months down the line you find out that DC needs extra support. I have heard this a couple of times.

I have no idea how DS (Y1) is doing or on what level is on, all his teacher told me is that he is fine. However, I have a feeling that his maths is not too great (still taking his time to add up numbers to 10 with his fingers) - great on 3D shapes though.

Thanks gobid. I want to know things is he supposed to be able to add up and take away 2 digit numbers in his head and basically what a year 1 is taught.
With literacy are they supposed to know about puncuation like apostrophes, speech marks, commas etc..
Just stuff like that really.

No to punctuation like apostrophes and speech marks and commas and no to adding up and taking away 2 digit numbers. Most Y1 kids would not be able to do any of that stuff.

For example this is what you need to get a level 1 in the subtopic 'numbers' of maths

  • count up to 10 objects
  • read, write numbers to 10
  • order numbers to 10
  • begin to use the fraction, one-half

And here is the level 1 reqs for the calculating sub topic:

  • understand addition as finding the total of two or more sets of objects
  • understand subtraction as ?taking away? objects from a set and finding how many are left
  • add and subtract numbers of objects to 10
  • begin to know some addition facts
  • solve addition/subtraction problems involving up to 10 objects
  • record their work

So your expectations are way off.

But this is the level 1 reqs not the Year 1 reqs.

Your darling might be working at level 1, level 2, level 3 - who knows? His teacher will be teaching him whatever he needs to know next.

End of year one: read and write in simple sentences with the beginning of awareness of different types of writing, eg a story or a recount of something they've done. Punctuation is mainly using capitals and full stops correctly. Add and subtract up to 20. Know number facts to 10 eg all the ways of making 10 with two numbers or all the doubles (2+2=4, 3+3=6 etc). Counting in 2s and 10s.

Also, follow school routines with 'work' all day.

Year 1 is a year in which children change and grow a lot, he may not do all this now but by July he might.

Thanks. I think with your first dc, you do not know what they should be doing etc., so this information can be reassuring.
