Hi,
My daughter is in reception. We are taking a holiday over the Easter break but she will miss 2 days of school. Do I need to write a letter to ask if this is ok or do I inform the school after the event?

Would it be possible for you to ring in sick on the first day that she should be back. Otherwise at my dcs school you have to fill out a holiday form and get permission from the Head before you go!

You need to write and ask permission. They will likely say it is "unauthorised" but that is just to get the figures to work properly, because heads are under enormous pressure not to approve time off school for family holidays. It doesn't mean you will be in big trouble for doing it.

And the first thing your daughter will say to the teacher is how much she enjoyed her holiday and no, she wasn't sick, she was on the beach! Why teach your daughter that for you lying is Ok?

We are going on holiday this half-term and needed two days off. We filled out the form and got it approved.

We are going to my home country though and wrote half an essay saying how ds needed to practise his second language and that he hadn't seen his relatives in ages.

Thanks for the replies. I never thought I'd be one for taking my kids out of school during term time and do feel bad about it. But April has too many bank holidays now that it's a shame not to put them to good use! The kids return for two days (Weds/Thurs)on the first week back and then start again the following week. So it would be the Weds and Thurs off. We are visiting DH's 85 year old Grandma so will write an essay about that when I fill out the forms. I don't think I could bring myself to lie and my daughter would certainly drop me in it!

Tbh although I am v against holidays in term time, given the way Easter, then royal wedding and may bank holiday are timed, I can see a few people not being at school on the wed and thur after Easter.

jenroy29 · 04/02/2011 22:20

spanieleyes I wouldn't do the ring in sick thing myself but I know people who've done it because of their dc's schools zero tolerance policies.

tribpot · 04/02/2011 22:21

Will she be four or five?

Why lie????
Ask, if they say it is unauthorised it doesn't stop you going it just means that it could potentially be flagged to welfare officer, as long as your child attends regularly the rest of the time they won't really be bothered.
