Sleep for reception age children

I just wondered what time other reception year children went to bed and woke up.

My 3 and 4 year old seem to be in a pattern of going to sleep between 7.30 and 8pm, and waking around 7.30am, although I often have to wake the eldest. I find it harder to get them to bed any earlier as there just doesn't seem enough time to eat, read, bath and very importantly for them to play after school. But this makes the morning seem a mad rush, but actually no matter how much time we have it seems to end up like that! And at the weekends we all like a lie in, they have never been early risers.

Interested in what patterns other children seem to have.

Thanks Smile

How do you all get your kids to sleep so early? I take DD1 (4.5) upstairs at 7pm and turn her lights out at 7.45 but she often plays in the dark 'til 8.30pm and sometimes later. I can't stop her. She just isn't sleepy. She wakes between 7am and 8am. Usually 7.45ish. Then we have a mad rush to get her to school.

Artichokes - I assume you've tried waking her earlier?

Artichokes · 04/02/2011 14:50

I have Taffet. If I wake her earlier she is horrendously grumpy all morning and yet still doesn't go to sleep when I turn the lights out. If I tire her out over many days of early waking and lots of activities then she occasionally crashes out at 7.30pm for one night only before returning to her late nights.

dd1 and 2 (who are 4 and nearly 2 respectively and share a room) go to bed around 7.30. Awake any time from 6 onwards though i think dd1 would sleep much longer if dd2 didn't wake her up, which is what normally happens.

Francagoestohollywood · 04/02/2011 14:53

My children used to go to bed at 8 at reception age and wake up at about 7.30/8. I don't want children up before 7.30 in the morning, to be honest.

DS1 never needed much sleep, usually in bedroom by 7.30pm, but plays until 8.30pm. Awake by 6.30am. He's 4.7

Francagoestohollywood - depends on the child. My DSis would get up at 6 no matter what. Even during the holidays when allowed to stay up late she would get up at that time. Now she is a teenager though you can't move her out of bed in the morning Grin

Redpanda, I know, ds used to survive on not much sleep as a baby/toddler etc and used to wake up earlier than what we wished. But he got better and by the time he was in reception he woke up at a friendlier time.

4 yr old in reception since Jan. Now goes to bed at 7ish and we wake him at 7.30am. NO time for anything but the basics in morning, dressed, breakfast, teeth, shoes and coat on, out the door.

Evening we do , walk home from school/ ballet class, play a little bit, maybe read a story. Watch Cebeebies while I cook tea, eat at 6pm, then stories, wash and bed.

He could do with an extra hour or two sleep a night really. He's a long sleeper who will sleep 14 hours a night. Now 4/ 5 weeks in to term he is knackered as he's been a hour or more short on sleep every night. I have not ruled out keeping him off school for a morning if thats what he needs to get back on a emotionally even keel later in term.

dd1, now 7, has NEVER slept longer than 10.5 or 11 hours tops, even as a toddler. Unless ill. No matter what time she gets put to bed, or has to get up.

dd2, now 4, seems to be following in her sister's footsteps..or nearly...bed at 7.30, asleep by 8pm, wakes up between 6-7am at the latest.

This is on school days, too Sad

GintyMarlow · 05/02/2011 12:41

DD was asleep by 8 last night and woke up this morning at 8:50. She does quite like sleep I think :)

EleanorJosie · 15/02/2011 17:22

DD1 - 5 - we start her 'bedtime routine' between 7 and 7.30pm and she is usually asleep between 8 and 8.30pm. She gets up at 7.30am so she is usually having 11-11.5 hours sleep.

DD2 - 2 - Asleep by 7.30pm, she wakes up about 7.30am too.

I couldn't really get them in bed much earlier most days as I get in from work at 6.30pm and want to spend a bit of time with them before they go to bed. They seem full of beans so I guess they are having enough sleep - it's pretty easy to tell when they haven't had a good sleep!

EleanorJosie · 15/02/2011 17:23

Sometimes I put myself to bed at 8.30pm and have eleven hours sleep - esp on a Friday night!

crystal07 · 15/02/2011 21:24

DD1 is in Reception and asleep at 7pm, wakes up at 7ish in the morning, sometimes I let her sleep till 7:30 then wake her.

newname0601 · 15/02/2011 21:32

I have 2 extremes in my 2 (both reception). DD is asleep by 6:30 and I wake her at 8am. DS is rarely asleep by 10pm and is up at 6:30am. I wish we could get ds to sleep more. About every 10 days or so he has a catch up couple of days when he gets to sleep around 8 but thats it.
