What book band is your reception child on?

Just colour/number please.

I'm not trying to be competitive and don't want to discuss it with mothers at school.

I'm just curious.

I also realise that some schools don't even start sending books home yet.

This is odd, because dd is getting stage 2 Ort sent home (which she reads easily) and we are reading beyond that level at home. Now reading this thread it would seem that at best that is 'average' ...., perhaps even below. (She won't be 5 until July though so one of the youngest in the year.) however she has just been selected as part of a small group that goes up to do 'letters and sounds' with YR 1 as the reception teacher thought they weren't getting much out of the reception level lessons. Perhaps they only 'do' level 1/2 in reception or something? Perhaps I should just ask!!

ruddynorah · 03/02/2011 12:14

Yes our class seem to stay on the lower bands with ort but mix this up with other resources ie harder flashcards, other reading scheme books, word walls etc. The ort books are just a teeny tiny part of everything.

SoupDragon · 03/02/2011 12:17

None. I am delighted to say that our school doesn't follow any of these reading schemes.

sofaslug · 03/02/2011 12:17

It does seem from this thread that Reception reading schemes vary a lot, both in the way they are administered and the type of books they use.

I also wonder about the definition of 'easily reading'. This probably also varies a lot in people's definition.

Does it mean reading through words quickly WITHOUT having to sound any out, or simply being ABLE to work out a lot of words in a book by sounding them out?

SummerRain · 03/02/2011 12:24

The teacher hasn't starting sending them home yet but he reads dd's L 1 & 2 bookes easily enough (more easily than dd!) That's the letterland scheme btw.

The class reader is L1 which he's bored mindless with and flew through

annoyingdevil · 03/02/2011 12:29

Red, he has only just started reception though. He just got his first sticker for turning the pages nicely

howmuchyousay · 03/02/2011 12:33

Thank you, this is all most reassuring.

He started on pink, although we purposefully didn't want to teach DS to read before school as I worried most about his ability to concentrate and sit still. I figured he would be less disruptive if he didn't know all his letters already Grin

Now that he is more interested in reading, I hope I shall relax a little more.

This school stuff is tricky!

Luckily at DSs school they all read to their individual level. When asking when they move a level their lovely teacher stated that the criteria is usually whether they are being challenged. So I would assume that if they are reading words quickly without having to sound any out, now is the time to move up a level. Also as the levels progress they look to comprehension as well.

blackeyedsusan · 03/02/2011 20:35

pink

just deleted the rant because I have said it all before. Sad

pigsinmud · 03/02/2011 20:48

Dd2 is on pink. Have no idea about rest of class as teacher changes the books. I know one girl is on red because dd2 came out of school the other day and said x is on red books and she said that means she is much cleverer than me .....here we go again.

I think at this stage only ds2 was on red, the other 2 of mine were on pink.

wearymum200 · 03/02/2011 21:00

Well I'm with the confused by it all brigade. However, thanks to a suggestion on here about Reading chest, DS is now reading the occasionally-provided school book with ease (I have mentioned to teacher that he is not being challenged, but we seem to be on the "you must go up each step" scheme) and reading a much harder, much better variety of books at home (we get books from library as well, so always have a variety on hand). He is on band 4 (at home, 2 at school), prob not being very challeneged, but am keen to build his confidence as my anxiety was due to him coming home with the message that "I'm not to read yet, it's too hard for reception" (and I would be happy with that for him if he really did find it too hard, but he doesn't)

PoppetUK · 03/02/2011 21:22

DS is on ORT stage 2. He can read most of these but will sometimes forget to sound out and sometimes will guess. I think that is because of the way ORT is. I think Songbirds would be better. Due to the boring nature of level 2 I would prefer him to move to level 3. He might get a few more words wrong but there is at least more of a story.

I have been a bit hung up on levels due to a move between curriculums and worrying what DD had missed etc. She didn't have any books for what would have been her reception year (started books at Xmas Y1) and little phonics. She stills reads just as well as those children that had books but I would have prefer covering some of the early stages in Year R.

ChasingSquirrels · 03/02/2011 21:26

haha - just went onto red (2nd level), he is very proud of it - but as he can't read, and couldn't read the books on the first level it seems a mad thing to have done - so I am going to talk to the teacher ask for more appropriate books (ie a lower level).

We appear to have a total mismash of ancient books which are put into sets, so it isn't a scheme as such. It also isn't phonic based.
In fact, I think it is crap - and I am only realising this with my 2nd child going through it as my 1st could read before he started school, and so didn't go through this stage.

5goingon13 · 03/02/2011 21:50

Doesn't make much sense to me, but have just looked at ds books. He has 2 books ort green stage 2 and ginn. Which they change every week. DS falls into the I prefer you reading to me category! Wink The comments in his school reading book aren't giving any reason to be concerned.

BaresarkBunny · 05/02/2011 12:42

DS is on level 8 band yellow of Ginn lighthouse but no idea what ORT or anything that is.

newname0601 · 05/02/2011 14:10

Absolutly no idea and I can't be bothered to get up of the sofa to go and look! What I do know that they're both on the right band for them and I couldn't care about the colour.

I don't mind that dd is streaks ahead of ds. She couldn't build the amazing mechano models my ds does with his imagination. Each to their own.

allbie · 05/02/2011 20:59

No idea! Has yr 1 written inside the cover. It's a 'storyworld' one stage 5! I really don't know what that means! Not too difficult for him though...he's gone through several different types, 43 books since starting in sept...just counted them, I'm amazed! He seems to like reading.

talktalk80 · 05/02/2011 21:31

green but think red is normal. dd was on red at thid stage too.

talktalk80 · 05/02/2011 21:32

Sorry normal not right word. Average.
