minimal progress in ks2

ds2 was assessed as level 4 in maths at hte end of y1 - all well and good, except he's now in y6 and we've just been told he's level 4a, possibly 5c on a good day ...

how is it possible for a child who's allegedly been on their G&T list for maths to have made barely any progress for the WHOLE of key stage 2 Shock

really not sure what to do about it

And you only just found this out? Have they been equivocating for the last 3 years about his levels?

There is nothing you can do about the lost 3 years. What should you do now?

I would probably take him out of that school instantly. Surely he'd learn more at home watching TV then he's learnt in the last 3 years.... So HE him while you find a diff school for him.

I don't know if there's anything wrong with his school or not - but it doesn't seem like it's the right school for him.

Do you think he really was a level 4 at the end of Y2? Did you think he was working at a Y6 level in Y2?

they've been telling me he's been making progress .. there's very little homework and what there is he doesn't often bring home (with no consequence from school) so it's difficult to assess.

He's got one of those brains which just 'gets' maths, so I suspect he was working at level 4 - certainly his very good y3 teacher told me he was going to be doing y6 work with him

He has good friends at school (and is socially awkward so long-standing friendships v important) but he is mega-bored

I've been pinning my hopes on him enjoying secondary - we live v near a partially selective secondary with a highly academic top stream - but in order to get into extension he needs level 5s across the board and at this rate I'm not convinced he's going to get them ...

I suspect then at this point in Y6 your best bet is a tutor.....

FreudianSlippery · 01/02/2011 12:23

How do you feel about his ability? If you play a game involving maths, does he struggle? Do you find yourself thinking 'shouldn't DS be able to do this by now?' or similar?

What I mean is, is it the assessment that's wrong, or is it genuinely that he's made no progress.

Do you think he has been allowed to coast? So maybe he hasn't been pushed and has just done the minimum and achieved the average for his age?.
I'd second the thought that a good tutor might be your best bet to try and sort the problem before SATS! If he is good at maths, he might really enjoy this (once you got over the usual moans and groans about "why do I have to do extra work?") and a tutor should be able to give you some independent advice about the level they think he is at and his maths abilities.
Could you try downloading a past SATS paper off the internet and giving it to him under exam conditions and see if he does well enough for a level 5?

Does the secondary school select top stream solely on SATS or do they do their own CATS tests ( which may pick up more on inate ability rather than what has bean learned). It might be worth finding out
