Just wondered if any junior teachers/parents had any information on this? Just noticed on my DS's school calender of events.. Are they generally informal tests to see how they are progressing or more formal written style tests?

If the school using a week for assessment I would imagine it to be more formal written tests rather than teacher assessment.

Thanks mrz, what would it take them a whole week to test?! Surely literacy, numeracy, reading and writing would not need a whole week. Presumably it will be just part of the day, they are only 7/8ys..

Thanks mrz, are they used to measure progress since September? Is this on Ofsted regualtion do you know, or school decision.

Entirely down to the school, there's no requirement to have formal testing in year 3, although of course teachers do need to keep assessment records.

They probably will use them to measure progress since september but a decent school will just use formal tests as one of many measures. Some children will struggle with formal tests and they should take this into account.

Of course, it may not be formal testing, it may be a more informal time for teachers to make sure that their own assessments are up to date- best to have a quick chat with the teacher if you're concerned. But IME 'assessment week' does usually include some formal tests.

Yeah it will be posted as an assessment week for a few reasons:
1 - to try and ensure all children are there to get all the tests done!
2 - even in year 6 SATS they only do 1 or 2 papers a day so it takes time to complete 2 maths papers, 1 mental maths paper, a spelling test, 2 writing papers and 1 reading paper!

They are normally in the mornings so the afternoons are usually given more fun activities. Assessment week should be pretty ok for children if sold in this way!
