Recp reading levels

Hi my dd has just been moved on to wrens ORT books
Level 2. She is my oldest so I have no idea if this is her desired level for her age etc. We recently had an extension built at home so I have been a bit lazy / busy and not had as much time to help her as normal. I'm worried she may be behind because of me. Anyone have any knowledge of this please ? I don't want to appear pfb to her teacher.

Sounds about right to me.
Does she like books, sharing them with you, enjoy talking about them and working out what words might say? When she guesses or theorises, does it make sense in the context?
Can she sound out a word and blend it, m-u-m and mum?
Don't get stressed, enjoy.

I think it depends from school to School. My kids school doesn't like to race through the levels which is fine by me. At this point with both ds1 and 2 in reception those who were in the top group for literacy started level 2 books after Christmas and the bottom group are on wordlessly still. With ds1 I was anxious he wasn't getting moved along fast enough as he was finding them easy really but now I have relaxed and really appreciate how much he enjoys reading and I think the schools laidback but deficient approach has helped that.

My DD is stage 2 Ort too. But they are too simple for her, but as you said I also don't want to come across PFB to teacher. I understand the children not being rushed through the levels though as they should be enjoying the books they read.

Thanks for input. She seems to enjoy it, tho I admit my dh is much more patient with her reading. I'm tired from ds2 by the end of the day and find it a chore. Since dh been doing it she has got on a lot quicker. Which is great.

I think the general consensus from all of the other reception reading threads is that there is a huge reading range during reception. A few children in my ds class are on ORT stage 5/6/7 (for technical reading) but obviously it's about comprehension, fluency and expression too. Others are still on 1 - 1+. It seems a thorough grounding in phonics at reception is more important than racing through the stages.

But sometimes there is more to reading than just being able to recite and read. Our school set goals and tasks for reading - perhaps they need to be able to predict what happens next, who is the main character etc....

I help with the reading for the Y2s at my daughter's school and the ability differs tremendously but all are progressing at their own rates and meeting their own milestones.

I did have a word with dd's teacher, once it became clear that the books were neither interesting nor challeging - didn't put it quite like that. Put onto next level, all solved. Most teachers don't bite and won't think you're pushy. And if they do?

Crystal last year ds1 finished reception on ORT 4 along with the rest of his guided reading group. The other groups finished on ORT 2 and 3. Start of year 1 his new teaches skippedlevel 5 for him completely and put him on ORT 6. I'm sure I read somewhere on here its kind of average to move up a book band per term some more frequently and some less so.

Ds one finished reception on red. Since than moved up 1 band per term. Now I believe is not quite meeting NC levels expected at end year 2. Ds2 picked things up quicker and has skipped levels. Now on blue which I guess is about ort4. Probably only skipped levels as I spoke to teacher. Did feel like I was being a pushy parent though.

thanks caffienated! I was only asking as I know some children are already reading level 3 and 4 in dds class. but I personally think they are not of that ability.

crystal, there's a huge range of reading ability in yr r, i've seen (my) kids started anywhere between the beginning and level 10 ort after assessment. most places have feedback diaries for reading etc - most teachers are happy to engage with parents who feel their child is on the 'wrong' level (in either direction). we've done it both ways - asked for children to be moved up (dd1 and ds1) and down (dd2) at various points. in all cases the rationale has been discussed and the changes implemented. i think it may have been the first time they've been asked to move a child down though Grin... but she wasn't my pfb lol.

I think my DD is ready to move onto stage 3, but I get the feeling the teachers may not see that as she is sometimes a bit distracted, I don't want to go on at the teacher about it because it is an excellent school, and I'm sure they do know what they are doing. Having said that I'm thinking of asking for some extra books to be sent home too.
Coccyx- obviously I don't know for sure but I should say I have some experience in classroom And I've seen it for myself.
