OK, sorry, I know this is being done to death, but after a bit of advice. DS, nearly 5, is now in 2nd term of reception. He could read before he went (at the basic phonics level, simple sentences etc). This is the 1st week he has been given a reading book
(we've been doing reading at home, anyway). School does "read write phonics"; I spoke to teacher on Monday as DS had been telling me that he had been told he would not be allowed to bring a reading book home un til year 1 as it was too difficult (ds is not a very reliable witness of what goes on at school) and 1st reading book duly turned up. It is the 1st one from set2 and is basically both too easy and dull! DS read it, did the speed words, the comprehension and then moved on to something more exciting. I sent the book back in his book bag tuesday morning and told him to ask teacher for the next one. he didn't, says he forgot (I don't drop off/ pick up again till Friday, so can't ask myself). I have got library books which he reads to me at home, but how far should I push it with school? Reasonable to ask for a book a day till he's up to something that challenges? Ask to skip a few book sets till ditto? Leave it and just carry on with our (not very systematic) reading at home? (but am worried he is getting bored and DH is fairly sure he is).
Sorry for long post....
