hi dd, is in p2 (scotland) and i am considering sending her to kumon. she is doing well according to her teachers but i find her maths abilities shocking. there is the whole curriculum of excellence thing going on adn i am totally at sea when i try and find out what she is meant to be achieving.

for example her homework this week involves filling in number sequences which are basically just counting.

am i panicking needlessly?

Unless she is obviously struggling, I'd say you were possibly panicking needlessly. Kumon involves quite a bit of homework and commitment from both of you, and at P2 she's really very young to be going down the formal route of extra tuition when learning should still be fun. Have you had a look at any maths websites for games etc she could do, or spoken to her teacher? There are still learning objectives for CfE, so perhaps you could ask about those? Has the teacher highlighted any concerns?

sequences were just counting, no patterns or going up beyond 1.

it is a big school and i worry that she isn't getting a good grounding in maths which iconsider to be vital at this age.

I did it with my ds, expensive pile of pants I think.
You child isn't very old and can't be good at everything. A wise woman told me one say that people are normally either good at english or maths. Sounds like your dd is better at maths.
School is hard enough to start with without adding other complications.

Ooooops, that's supposed to say better at english - sorry! Blush

I am in Edinburgh, also have a dd in p2. The number work they are doing at present is numbers up to 100 and understanding which numbers are bigger, smaller etc. They also count 3 numbers now up to 20, eg what is 6+5+3. Homework for this weekend is also number sequences, colouring in odd numbers and even numbers etc. She is needing a bit of help with maths but does ok, I would say this level of work is appropriate for the p2s, they are still afterall covering the basics, p1 was knowing numbers 0-9 and number stories/bonds within this range.

Does your dd do similar number work? Does she ever do adding and subtraction?

I don't know much about kumon, have heard its lots of worksheets though which sound hideous. Explore learning is computer based but my elder dd has done a few summer workshops there and loved it - expensive though! there are 2 in Edinburgh

forget Kumon - use maths-whizz online instead. It's 150 per year and so much cheaper than Kumon or getting a tutor. my son loves it so it hardly feels like work!
