Does this ring a bell with any of you out there?

My 7.5 year old is really struggling in school. The teacher says that he has very poor concentration skills, writes very little and finds numeracy difficult. He is in bottom groups for numeracy and literacy.
His reading age is where it should be.

He has not been getting a regular good night's sleep since October time as we are trying to cure his enurises and is waking at least once a night with a wet bed. The teacher said that he was making some progress before Christmas but now seems to have reached the buffers a bit in everything.

I went to see her tonight and instead of giving strategies for helping with his written work, her line of argument was that she encourages the children to be responsible for their own learning and will support him up to a point.

I am at a loss as to what to do next. Any ideas. Should I pay for a tutor? My DH wants to see the SENCO and get him assessed- we have been told since he was 5 that he has difficulty getting "on task"

Any advice?

Thanks

Thanks!

You want him assessed for what? SENCOs don't assess.

However you should start by seeing the SENCO. Tell her pretty much what you've told us. Hopefully she'll be able to advise the teacher on appropriate strategies.

Just don't expect an 'assessment' out if it. That's not what she does. If you want an assessment for any kind of SN that has to be done by a medical professional.
