What level of maths ability is expected in reception?

Hi
Just a query really. Am finding it really difficult to get to grips with what standard of maths a reception age child is generally expected to do. Feedback from her teacher suggests DD is doing fine, but to be honest she doesn't seem to have progressed since she started in Sept. Would be grateful if anyone could tell me what sort of things most children can do by the end of year R, and also if there are any good websites they know of?
Thanks

To be honest, I think you need to chill a little. Reception year is not just about maths and english etc, but about learning how to behave in a social setting and getting used to being in a school environment. If her teacher is happy with her progress, then I would say she's doing fine. She's not been at school long.

The vistor 0 I quite agree and wouldn't say I was worried. Just seems a bit odd that to be honest she seems to be having more difficulty doing very simple sums now than when she started (we'd never done anything formal with her before school but she seemed to "understand" numbers better then than now if you know what I mean).

I really wouldn't worry, my DD1's maths target at the end of reception was to ty counting to 100, she could already do this. Just count things, then maybe see if she knows one more or one less. It could be that you and the school use different language for maths, so you could ask the teacher about this, and what they are oing each week/month. We get a weekly update on what they are doing at DCs primary.

Thanks mummytime. I thin that's the problem (as far as their is one!) - I don't really know what's happening at school with Maths. I have much more idea with reading as a book comes home.

In reception children are expected
to say number names (recite if you like or number songs and rhymes)
to count objects accurately
to recognise the numerals 1-9
to use more/greater or less/smaller to describe quantities
to find one more or one less than a number
and to use the words add/plus and subtract/take away
know that addition is combining groups of objects (so practical )
talk about recognise and recreate simple patterns (red, blue red ..)
know circles, square, oblongs, triangele
use bigger and smaller to describe objects
be able to say where an object is - in front of, on top of, behind, in the box

Thanks mrz - I was imagining it was quite a lot higher level than that.

Some children will be working at a higher level some lower
The main thing in reception is that they use mathematical concepts independently without adult direction.

I would say she's already working at a higher level than thant and in fact could do all that before she started. Maybe that's why it doesn't seem like she's progressed - they've been consolidating rather than moving her on.
Very reassuring. Thanks.

The part that children often struggle with is using what they know in everyday situations
