There, their and they're...for 5 year olds???

DS(5)is in year one and has 10 spellings a week. This weeks included their, there and they're. Now obviously these are tested so ds's teacher would have to give examples on how you would use them in a sentance. So DS and I have been over and over "their toys, over there, and they're here" but if I use different examples he gets completely confused and I have no clue on the examples that his teacher will use, she also mixes them up so I can't get him to remember them by number either..
Anyone have any ideas on how I can teach him, i'm at a loss. Seems a bit much for a 5 year old to me. Possibly surpassed himself spelling "because" last week. :o

Could you do a quiz and see if he can choose which word to 'fill in the blank'. Do sentences and leave gaps, I mean.

I wouldn't worry too much at his age if he doesn't get it. Just good to introduce it and keep reinforcing it as he gets older.
Would be beyond my almost 5 yr old though!

Would go clean over my ds' head (also in year 1)!

How about Where? There! for there.. would that help? And they're as they are?

I remember doing this with Year 2s (back in the mists of time), not Year 1s.

Hmm Dd did this in Y2.

Look at 'there' without the 't'= 'here', so it's all about a place, here, there, everywhere etc.

'they're- - the apostrophe tells us that really it's 'they are'

Which does leaves, 'their' - the odd one out!

I think that the there/their/they're discussion gets revisited every time a glaring mistake is made in our house.

I was reminding my 13 year old about it a few weeks ago. Who remembers intricate and awkward spellings like this once and for life?

Expecting perfect recall is unrealistic and leads to anxiety. Running through the 3 different spellings and meanings as a general observation seems more humane.

I was going to say what CB said Smile

their has an 'i' in it because it's about a person :)

It seems awfully young to be covering this as I remember doing it in what is now year 3. Except they are not really covering it, they are expecting you to.

mrz · 21/01/2011 16:46

I wouldn't teach they're in Y1 I would teach they are

newportstateofmind · 21/01/2011 21:51

I wouldn't expect the majority of Year 2s to get there, their and they're, let alone Year 1s!
