DS (year 1) isn't keen on chapter books. He is ploughing his way through the Guiness book of records he had for Christmas though

emy72 · 19/01/2011 10:31

DD1 is reading the Sophie stories as recommended by Pixieonaleaf on here!

She is also reading the Poppy Princess stories, they are definitely her favourite...

The laughable thing is she is still on ORT 6 books at school, we do read them just to go through the motions.........

cheekymonkey2 · 19/01/2011 11:10

My ds (year 1) loves the Dirty Bertie books and likes Billy Bonkers too. He also enjoys the usbourne puzzle adventures. Bizzarely he still enjoys reading the kipper magic key adventures from school too!

Aliens love underpants saves the world lol for my 5 and 6 recently, Room on the Broom, short stories from a bedtime story book. I'm struggling to find the time to read long stories and the home readers as well, we are all knackered by the end of the day and have a toddler who is learning he doesn't get mummy the whole time. I'm keen on them learning and enjoying books but not stressing that they haven't read or been read to Roald Dahl chapter books yet. They'll be plenty of kids that have at 6 or 7 and that's fine to. I added that last comment because often I'd be bothered by what I wasn't yet doing with the kids. I'm feeling good at the moment about doing what's right for our family, our personalities etc.

My son loves reading the seriously silly stories, and seriously silly colour books, his favourite is the silly willy billy goats. He likes captain underpants too. I'm currently reading him fantastic mr fox.

Poppet, my son also likes room on the broom, we read that last night. Nothing wrong with those type of books for 6yr olds at all! :) the main thing is your reading books they enjoy, we read loads of picture books still, he loves the smartest giant in town. :)

emy72 · 19/01/2011 11:53

Poppetuk - I definitely know what you mean. We have 4 children all under 7 and so this means that we don't get to read to them every night - it is almost impossible!

I do have phases where I feel very guilty - but then again we are doing our best and that's all we can do too!!!

The worst time for me was when I went home recently and my mum showed me what I was reading at 6 years old.....!!!!

wheelsonthebus · 19/01/2011 12:06

Horrid Henry for boys and Rainbow Fairies for girls (no stereotyping here)Wink

magicmummy1 · 19/01/2011 18:15

The rainbow fairy ones are deadly boring, though.

DD (5) is currently obsessed with Secret Seven. Grin

peanutbutterkid · 19/01/2011 18:28

DS is 6yo, albeit in Yr2.
I read to him TinTin and Asterix or similar graphic novels.

MigratingCoconuts · 19/01/2011 18:32

I like your thinking Poppetuk!!

We read whatever they choose.

DD (6) can choose anything from her fav dragon story book by Usborne... or Hairy McClarey...or MrMen...or Room on a Broom oxford reading tree

BeeandSon · 20/01/2011 08:53

thank you everybody for all the suggestions
(really helpful as we r not in uk at present but soon back)
Will look them up on Ama and run an order.

Did not know DS enjoyed chapter reading at bedtime till I tried this. I find that without pictures he also fall asleep faster as he doesnt need to keep looking. Obvious as it may sound I was pleasantly surprised

btw..... at what age can I stop reading bedtime stories without being a slack mum? Doesnt seem to end........ Smile Do children who can read start reading in bed by themselves at some point?

Also any idea from adult/classic literature that may suit 6yr? I do not have much time to read anymore and my taste will not suit an under 18 anyway Blush so I cannot think of any

BeeandSon my middle DD used to "read" (picture books) in bed whilst her older sister read, after a story with dad. Then she just naturally progressed to actually reading her own stuff too. I have trouble getting them out of bed in the morning because more often than not they have their noses in a book the moment they wake up.

VerintheWhite · 20/01/2011 10:24

Faraway Tree is good.

TheMoreItSnows · 20/01/2011 10:44

My 6 yr old is reading all the Poppy & Max (Sally Grindley) books in bed by herself, and together we're reading the last Anna Hibiscus book, having just finished The Wishing Chair.

Seeline · 20/01/2011 14:40

My 9 yo very fluent reader DS still likes to be read to every night - usually just a few pages from which ever book he is currently reading. Shows no signs of it wanting to stop though!
Have you tries the Beast Quest books? they got my DS into reading chapter book, and reading to himself. Equally as tedious as the Rainbow Fairy books but more suited to adventure-seeking boys!!

DreamTeamGirl · 20/01/2011 21:05

We are reading (me to him)
Dinosaur Cove
Astrosaurs
Faraway Tree
Wishing Chair

And him to me
Any & all ORT- he loves them
DK Readers Levels 1, 2 and 3

We have maybe 25 mins or reading a night, then he is allowed to read to himself for 5-10 mins

BeeandSon · 21/01/2011 21:48

wow thanx plenty of suggestions

looks like still have years to reading myself to sleep in his bed [rolling eyes]
