should they be bringing a reading book home by now in reception or is it normal not to bring any yet? Or to even be able to decode more than 3 letter words?

At our reception they didn't bring home any books until they had been at school for 4 months.

We then received a list of 50 words they are supposed to be able to read by the time they leave reception.

my dd1 didnt have reading books to bring home till she was in year 1.

orangepoo · 12/01/2011 19:33

My DS brings a reading book home in reception - has done since around half term last term. He can sound words longer than 3 letters as long as they are not irregular words. He knows a few tricky words, not many. His ability is average for a boy in reception I think.

I think there is a list of words that a child is supposed to be able to read by the end of reception. If anyone has a link, I'd be interested so see how my DS is doing against the list.

BerryLellow · 12/01/2011 19:34

DS1s reception teacher said that they started them with reading books when they show an interest/seem ready. So I think it's normal.

CurtainTwitcher · 12/01/2011 19:53

DD is desperate to read so reads to us at home. I find it hard as DS was quite advanced and reading in nursery so in reception he brought home a reading book from 2 weeks in and is free reader at just turned 7

From day 1 in my DDs school. However, as you can read in another thread in primary education, it is a long, long road so best to start early.

MigratingCoconuts · 12/01/2011 20:12

no, best is to start when ready...

lovecheese · 12/01/2011 20:14

Yes, but why wait till Yr1 like biglips's school?

lovecheese, i do not know of this thread you refer to...but I do know you need to wait for a kid to be developmentally ready.

Why would you rush something this important?

PoppetUK · 12/01/2011 20:32

As a mum of a year 2 who started to read later than all of her UK educated peers. I don't believe it makes a huge difference belongs they are 1) ready 2) taught well. My DD reads ok for year 2 but has missed a lot of phonics work from being in a different system. She's getting there but I can see a little difference but I don't think there will be any difference in a year or so.

mrz · 12/01/2011 20:48

There really isn't any point in sending home reading scheme books before a child can decode the words. Until then stick with reading stories together.

biglips · 13/01/2011 11:20

sorry i was wrong as it was in reception....

i was half asleep yesterday Blush

emy72 · 13/01/2011 12:32

My son still hasn't brought home any reading books, in reception.

I wouldn't say he is not ready, as he could decode words since he was about 18 months old. He can also write pretty well, even though he is a summer born.

It's clear that they are working on the phonics, which is fine. I have to say I am a little nervous about it, especially as we have no idea when these books will start coming.

However, I put faith in the school that they know what they are doing, unless I will be proved otherwise, I guess.

lovecheese · 13/01/2011 13:19

My comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek BTW.

mrz · 13/01/2011 17:57

How many terms in reception did your daughter have biglips?

mrz · 13/01/2011 17:58

emy72 the point of phonics is for them to read books if he can read he should have a book.

DastardlyandSmugly · 13/01/2011 18:08

DS brings two books home everyday. One book for me to read to him and one Big Cat Phonics book for him to read to me. He also has a growing box of words that he learns.

coccyx · 13/01/2011 18:15

We have a big pot of single letters, and 2/3 letter words. Most of class have been given first book with words in this week.
If you are worried see the teacher but as we are on child 4 i would trust the school

BlueberryPancake · 13/01/2011 21:48

Got DS (reception) first list of two-three letter words mid December and books first week back from the holidays.
