Do school books need to be read every night or listened to?

Hi all,

My DD is pretty tired at the moment. It's not surprising because by the time I've got toddler down, then DS 5 it's getting on before I some quiet time to listen to her home reader.

I was wondering if I could start listening to DD every other night for bit just to try and bring forward bedtime a little. She is year 2 and reading ORT Stage 10. It wasn't a long term thing but just wondered if it would help her be a bit more refreshed.

Any tips. Thanks. I didn't know what was expected of her / me with the readers. We are currently reading half a book per night.

Thanks again

p.s Library book came home today and it was a huge novel. It's just not possible at the moment for me to get through this as well.

I think half a stage 10 book per evening session is OK. We are happy if our children read 4 times a week to an adult or older sibling. She should be ready to start reading other books to herself just before she goes to sleep.

It's important to carry on reading out loud, for expression, punctuation, accuracy, comprehension, etc.

Don't make it a chore otherwise it will put your child off IME. Read to them is a good way to get through it and just don't worry.

That's exactly how it can feel. It's putting me off the next 5 years of bedtime routine. Don't get me wrong ORT has it's place but I'd really love to read to them just as much as they read to me. I was thinking of doing Monday - Thursday school books and then something more fun at the weekends but didn't want to be going against school. (They have actually never said what they expect of DD).

Thanks for posting

TBH around this stage, if a child has zoned out, I say they can read any book they like as long as it (approximately) suits their ability and they log it in the diary. Much better a willing reader than a non-reader.
Endless ORT sounds like purgatory.

It's me that's zoned out Grin

We are Y1 and only read the school book 2 days a week, with our own books every other night

As long as you and she are looking at books frequently together then I wouldnt worry if it isnt every night
