Does anyone have a min requirement for the time spent on PE and any other legislation as I feel this is very important.

Is private school different and do they start young and help introduce fun and sports?

Anyone have info on Finland as I understand that they are in the forefront with sport in school.

There isn't a statutory time requirement for 5 year olds in England.

My dd is 5 and at a state primary - from what I can gather they have one hour a week for PE and that includes getting changed in and out of PE kit. They do run around at play time, but it's not enough in my opinion. Most of the children in dd's class do some form of out of school sports. DD does gymnastics, swimming and dance club. School offer football, rugby, tae kwon do and dance club, which are after school and need to be paid for.

Runoutofideas is she in reception or Y1?

ds1 (5) is at an independent school and does sport every day. Swimming once a week, tag rugby or cricket, tennis, football and "PE" (ie climbing around on equipment in the sports hall). Plus they then have an after school sports club which does not cost any extra where they do things like rounders, climbing wall, 5 a side.

Its one of the reasons we (or should I say sports mad DH!) chose independent.

They manage this however because school starts at 8.30 and finishes at 4.

Sorry - she's yr1.

My DD is in a private school in reception and year 1 that had 3 30 min PE and 1 30 min Dance session per week changing was not included in this time. They have played quick cricket, basic gymnastics, Balance and ball skills. All 4 sessions are with different specialist teachers for each skill. This rises to 4 of PE and 1 dance in year 2. Ballet is also offered in the school from reception and in year 2 judo and climbing are also offered. One of these sessions is swimming in the summer - outdoor pool.
Team sports including hockey starts in year 3.

Our Y1 (state school) have 2 x 40 mins plus 1 hour dance and 1 hour gym after school.
In reception PD is very fluid.

DD4 is at prep and has 2 x 30 min PE lesson in the week excluding changing time, also has a 1 x 30min games lesson where they learn different kinds of sport incl hockey, rounders, football etc
