Books for 6 year old boys

I have twin boys who have just tured 6 and are in year one. Their reading is broadly average I think and they are on ORT stages 4 and 5. The problem is they seem to find these books very boring and see them as homework and want to read other books. However, all their other books seem to be for parents to read to them or are for more advanced readers, having been inherited from DS1.

WE have lots of Roald Dahl etc but they are not at this level yet. Does anyone have any recommendations? We visit the library regularly but it's a very small one and seems to be either toddler books or those for advanced readers.

I have been trying to find books for my six year old grandson, and have come away from the site armed with a nice long book list, thanks everyone. Having said that, he has just finished all the Mr Gum books in just three weeks!

DS2 (just 7) loves the Tom Gates books - has loads of pictures rather than a full page of text (which can be a bit daunting)

I just found Hopscotch Adenture books in my library today they have a series about Robin Hood, King Arthur and some greek myths. We read one about Beowulf to tonight. My Ds is 6 and is currently reading level 6 ORT he could manage these with a little help on the names. Just reserved all the Robin Hood ones from the library.
