Year 2 Times tables

Hi there,

I read somewhere that kids need to know the 2,5 and 10 times tables in year 2.

Do all the kids know them by now???? We've come from overseas.

DD can count up in 2's, 5's and 10's but only knows the answers to x2 in sums.

Should I be practising with her and if so are the 2x,5x and 10x enough.

Thanks in advance.

Poppet

By the end of year 2, most children should be able to count up in 2s, 5s and 10s. At this stage in the year, not many can- in my school, we introduced the multiplication symbol just a few weeks ago, and most of the class are only doing x2 questions at the moment. A few high ability children have been practising some x5 and x10 calculations, using lots of practical equipment to help them.

Thanks pinkygirlythoughts. Very helpful info.

No need for me to stress. I guess I am looking closely to ensure she's not missed anything major in the move.

I still can't get over how much the kids know at 6 / 7 years old these days. My maths is getting better once again :)

Thanks again.

In my Y2 class all the children can count in 2s,5, and 10s (did this in reception) but not all know their 2,5 and10 times tables yet. I expect by the end of the year they will be able to answer random times table questions not just recite.

Thanks mrz. Relieved I don't have to start a crash course with my DD in tables!!! (I could do with the practise though) :)

My DD can and she is not in the top set either. She can also do 3's, 4's, 9's, 11's, 6's and some 7's, randomly and with the corresponding division fact. But I don't think she is the norm, she just seems to be able to absorb them easily.

My DD is doing her times tables with the help of Discos Tables CD I found on Amazon. It was recommended by her teacher and the whole class use it. Drives me bonkers but it does work! Also, the teacher suggested putting up a times table chart by her bed (£1 from Morrisons). DD is an early riser but she does take 10 minutes each day to look at it. I've also heard her using it in role play when she plays at schools.
