What is it with my kids school and Films? The amount of films they watch at school drives me mad.. I wouldnt mind if they watched documentaries like National Geographic, or History channed; instead we've had Shrek/3 muscateers/toy story/cats and dogs..- you name it!

Every time I buy them a DVD for home, thinking they've not watched it, "Oh mum, seen it at school!" they cry..

I drove them 5 miles in slippery ice to school today, and in the car I said to them "Tell teachers not to date put a film on else I 'll make trouble!!" as I skidded away.

Is i something all schools do? Am I becoming a grump who doesnt want her kids to have fun at school? Does Walt Disney feature on the curriculum? ...

mrz - you and your school sounds amazing. I would be happy for my ds to be there.

polarfox · 20/12/2010 16:13

Well!!! Today was the Incredibles!!

I did ask son if they discussed anything (whatsover!) related to the film afterwards- reply was "No, but we did discuss which film to watch before choosing that one"... so maybe the lesson was on developing negotiation skills (!!!!)

I am totally with you on this op. Nowt wrong with the occasional film but all the time? No thanks. I remember having one film at the end of each term in the hall, we had to vote what to watch.

I think there are great educational videos too on all sorts of subjects but you have to be careful that they don't get overused or as a substitute for talking and teaching.

Rupreckt · 20/12/2010 18:12

We have used films as part of a literacy plan too such as Aladdin and Toy Story.

Think OP means more that it is used to entertain the children rather than teaching them.

Most of our Y1 girls would rather colour and write stories than watch the DVD.

Yulephemia · 20/12/2010 20:57

I'd like to see you self-righteous parents who think you know better than teachers keeping children's attention while you attempt to teach them something new AND rehearse and perform a nativity play AND practise for the end-of-term carol service AND deal with pre-Christmas hysteria AND a quarter of the class off sick AND a quarter off on holiday early. There's only so much that can be achieved at this time of year - get off your high horses and look at the school's performance over an academic year, THEN if you're unhappy, speak to the HT.

As you were. Happy Yuletide. Xmas Grin

polarfox · 21/12/2010 10:40

Get your point Yulephenia, but it's not leading to Christmas.. it's throughout the year!

I can entertain them at home; that's not why I send them to school. And as mentioned ,there are fab, educational things to watch Blue Planet, etc- they even come in box sets!!

Today apparently it's Bug's Life on the menu..

Dont know what's tomorrow, but if it snows they will be watching it at home- am going on strike!

I think a film at the end of the term is ok but everyday for the last week I would rather them staying at home than going to school too!

Here they seem to watch several movies/cartoons in the last week but never all the way to the end. Drives my Dcs mad. Last year they started watching Narnia but did not finish. The following day was a movie again in the afternoon they all wanted to see the end of it but the teacher said they would watch something else (cannot remember what now) to which they have not seen the end of either. Stoopid IMHO!Grin

Yulephemia as a self righteous teacher who did manage to teach my class right up until the final day of term (even on the morning prior to the Christmas party and two afternoon performances and a visit from Father Christmas) I'd like to say there is no need for videos everyday

Seona1973 · 21/12/2010 16:09

dd had Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the old version with Gene Wilder) yesterday and The Polar Express today - she was out 5 minutes late today so that they could see the end of the film. Meanwhile we all froze our butts off outside waiting for them!! She did say they did 1 bit of work this morning.

I'm off at a tangent again - but mrz, what happens when the funding stops for the meals?

mrz · 21/12/2010 16:15

Parents who are entitled to free school meals because they receive the appropriate benefits will still be eligible other parents will have to pay.

candytuft63 · 21/12/2010 16:25

When I was at high school in the seventies we watched a film in the hall at the end of the Christmas term. It was a real treat. The films were in colour ! I lived in a tiny village miles away from a cinema and it was a great start to the holiday. Lots of children had never been to "the pictures".

Lots of films watched this past few weeks but only during break and lunch as the yard has been inaccessible due to snow and ice. How else can 6 dinner ladies keep 145 under 7' s settled....

mrz · 23/12/2010 10:28

We only have 120 under 7s and 3 dinnertime supervisors but put out drawing paper and felt pens, board games and lots of Lego and other construction toys ...

polarfox · 23/12/2010 16:44

There's 87 under 7s and 4 supervisors at our primary so not convinsed its due to that- rather the easy lazy options, have to agree with mrz.

And TBH its not always during wet play, they start off like that and then it seems they eventually creep in at all times.

I had to pick DS early for dental app few weeks ago, and after being given third degree by HM (only picked him up 35 mins before end of school day), he grumped on exit as I cut short Alvin and chipmunks!!!!!
