Expectations of 6 year old in UK re Literacy?

DD, born Sep 2004, started school and learning to read in September. She is educated abroad and the majority of her peers have English as a second language. English is probably DD´s dominant language.

What should she be able to read/achieve at this stage? I have absolutely no idea what is normal and I can´t easily compare her to other children.

To clarify - I wasn't implying at all that all UK teachers can't and don't do that. Unfortunately ours doesn't Sad.

I know there are lots of teachers who do a great job of this from reading posts on here (e.g. Mrz's).

All mumsnet children are well above average.

However, no mumsnetter ever knows what other children are doing, so they are charmingly unaware of their child's ability.

Mumsnetters are masters of the middle class self deprecating boast.

"My children are driving me insane this holidays! Honestly, I do think Sebastian is a bit odd. All he wasnt to do is sit in his room and read Virgil - that can't be normal, surely! And the noise in our house! If it's not Ianthe playing her cello, it's Caractacus working on his wood turning lathe - and the mess he creates with that has to see to be believed! Wood shavings everywhere. And the smell of the glue when he's actually putting the chairs together....."

LOL at Sebastian et al! A child who is doing all of that complex sentence stuff, etc, as in the post re: year 1 child (sorry, forgotten poster's name) is WAY, WAY ahead. What is described is Y6 stuff. In my experience. And I have taught years 1- 6 over several years in different schools/demographics. So, well done that kid, fabulous news - but don't worry if your child is not at this level.

What's normal is what's normal for your child.

My DD was similar to SE13's DD and was on the Gifted & Taltented register from Reception. My DS has been on several different 'reading recovery' schemes and can still barely sound out simple words: he'll be 7 in Feb.
