school charging for extra-curricular clubs?

got a message from school today...from next term they will be charging for extra curricular clubs. £20 per term for years 4,5,6 and £10 per term for year 3s (less clubs available.) These are not professional clubs, like chelsea-run football. These are the standard clubs like recorder and netball, rugby and sewing. Run by staff. Note says its because of cuts to budgets, clubs will make up the shortfall. Staff will not be paid, money will be used for school budget.

Anyone ever heard of another school doing this? Is it even legal?

I know. My point was that (as far as I know) running an after-school club is not part of a teacher's terms and conditions of service and, where they do it, we as parents should be jolly grateful instead of regarding it as some sort of right!

None of our school's after-school clubs - all of which charge much more than £20 - are run by teachers.

I work in a school where although it is not expected that you run a club you are viewed as a bit odd if you don't.

The clubs at my children's primary school are all free. I ran one myself for a number of years and paid for all the resources out of my own pocket - most teachers that I know of do the same.
I think your attitude is a bit mean spirited tbh, your children are benefiting from teachers voluntarily giving up their own time to share a skill with your children and you are begrudging the school a relatively small amount of money. As a governor I know exactly how hard-pressed schools are at the moment, this money will be going to provide resources for your children.

I would happily pay for extra-curricular clubs at my DCs' school - certainly 320 a term sounds good value, esp if we are talking an hour after school.

But FWIW actually at the state schools my DC go to, clubs are free, unless run by outside agency (football club, Mad Science etc).

DD and DS2 both do choir after school; DD also does orchestra and three lunchtime clubs; DS2 does football and one lunchtime club. All free.

DS1 at secondary does film club - free. There are other clubs too. We live in an affluent area; the school I work in is in a poorer area and all clubs are free there (maybe 50p charge for cookign club).

Hmm 320 a term is quite dear actually; I meant £20 of course....
