Hello mns!! I was just wondering if someone can help me decide what I should do about my ds secondary education, I can't decide if I should send him to a big independent school or a local independent school. The former would mean I have to spend some money on a tutor to bring him up to 11+(common entrance) standard(because current ind primary is not up to that standard it's only ks2 standard), the latter would mean he'd be more than welcome(I have already checked it out and the education is not all that)
The thing is I can't really afford to send him to a big ind school, and would be relying on a scholarship place or a part fee paid position what I want to know is should I bother wasting money on a tutor hoping to go for a place in the big schools(I know there's no chance)? or just give it up and resign myself to sending him to the local independent? Confused
Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance!!!

If you can't afford it then don't. There's no guarantee that you will get any financial help towards the fees. If you can afford the tuition then do though as it will help with both schools. Don't do it just because he may get a scholarship.

Not a problem. It's never easy. Best of luck whatever you decide. Smile

The thing is I went to my local ind secondary and let's just say it wasn't very challenging for me so I got bored and just messed around instead of studying(regreting it soo bad now) don't want the same for ds as I know he is the same as me gets bored easily. It was the schools fault for not having variety and a number of other factors too. The thing is if I tutor him upto 11+ standard then he goes local ind, I know for a fact he will be bored as that school takes ks2 level 4 children so I guess I won't be tutoring after all.

OP I don't understand - if you need to mega-tutor yr son to get to the big private school, then why do you think he would a) get a scholarship or b) be bored at the other school?

What I am saying is, if he's very bright then why the tutor; if he's average (the horror) then maybe the other school will suit well?

LynetteScavo · 13/12/2010 22:31

Because, Clary other children will be tutored to pass the common entrance and he needs to be on a level playing field with them. I suspect he is neither very bright, or average, but somewhere in between.

OP, I think you should give the scholarship a go, and if he doesn't get it then, hey the local ind' will have to do. If you don't give it a go, you'll always be wondering.

He got level 5 in year 3 so there's not much left for him to do really the tutoring is just to familiarise him with the common entrance papers really that's if I enter him for the big ind he doesn't really need it for local ind. I was just wondering if I should bother. Any advice appreciated clary!
