thinking of doing this for my ds1. I'd be interested to hear about what you think of the service and wether it's worth the money?

I don't subscribe, so can't really comment, but have you checked out your local library? Ours has a fabulous selection of children's books, and brilliant, helpful librarians who are really good at helping to select suitable reading material for dcs. And best of all, it's free!! Grin

Have seen lots of positive feedback on here about reading chest though, so it might be worthwhile! :)

mychatnickname · 09/12/2010 20:25

Yes I do and I think it's fab. So far pretty new books, ds likes getting them addressed to him in the post and the star chart. Well worth it if you can't get to the library easily.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 09/12/2010 20:59

I am really crap at getting to the library, magicmummy and then really really rubbish at getting the books back in time. The fines at our library are really hefty too. You are right though, that would be the most sensible thing!
Mychat, thats good to hear, I think ds would like the delivery of books too. I liked the fact they seem to have lots of non fiction for younger ages, which he would enjoy.

we started with the Reading Chest a month ago and I think its a good idea. Good to get a handle on comparitive reading schemes and the choice of books is great - mixed fiction and non fiction. As mychatnick says, ds loves getting his big white envelope addressed to him and is really keen to read the books so he can put a star on the chart - I have the silver so three swaps of three books per month but may upgrade to the unlimited package.

I really like Reading Chest. We joined in September when all our stuff was in transit and I've just cancelled. I really like the idea of it and will probably dip in and out of it.

DD gets books every day from school and we never finish them so I wasn't using it enough. DD (5) could do with getting more books from school so I would think about using it with him but I've got so many ORT that I'll probably go along with them for the moment and try and save myself some dosh. He also has a reading eggs subscription.

I really don't have enough time to get through as many books with my little ones as I would like. Xmas hols I'm going to focus more on me reading to my kids.

Bottom line. If I hadn't got so many ORT and I was starting from scratch I'd join.

Service from Reading Chest has been fantastic and would recommend it as a company.

www.readingeggs.com.au or www.readingeggs.co.uk

It's an online programme that helps little ones learn to read through phonics. Big in Australia. Obviously not a substitute for books but I used it for my son because he was ready to learn and not yet at school. He's still using it now to help teach him the phonics.

Always sending offers through. It's the sort of thing that he'll spend 20/30 mins on each day in the hols (every other day). That's the best time to do a free trial.

I love reading chest - I used during the summer holidays, am terrible at returning books to library, it meant I was able to give a wide range for the summer holidays. I will be using it during the holidays. Fantastic service, great books - no negative to say.

Runoutofideas · 10/12/2010 08:00

My dd loves reading chest. She loves getting the books addressed to her, and loves the range of books available - her school books are the very dull Ginn360. You can opt out of a particular reading scheme so you don't duplicate school books. Books have always appeared 2 days after I posted them back. It is very easy to use and the service has been very good in my experience.

lovecheese · 10/12/2010 08:17

Yes, and can second the very good service; books sent promptly, always in mint condition, e-mail queries answered immediately. Good coming up to a holiday period.
