Showing PG films to Year 1

Our school has informed us that they will be showing PG DVDs to our Year 1 children. I'm not sure what I think about this really. I tend to pick U-rated films for my scaredy cat on the whole. What do you all think?

Only U films in our primary, which makes most of the older KS2 children roll their eyes! However, I can see why the school do this. I was a little Hmm when dd1 was shown Mama Mia, before the school policy changed.

Interesting about the Rocky Horror mention earlier: when I first got a copy of this it was graded an 18; the poster earlier said it was a 15 now; and I've just looked and it seems to be now graded a 12.

I think schools should use their discretion about PG films but should also issue a general disclaimer at the start of the year, mentioning this may be the case so that anyone who objects to their particular child watching a PG without specific permission from the parents, can raise their concern.

My dd (yr 1) is terrified of most films.

She sobbed her way through Toy Story 3, Hotel for dogs, Up and various others. She just doesn't seem to be able to cope with anything even vaguely scary on screen. She has an incredibly active imagination, and is not yet able to separate fact from fiction.

As such, I wouldn't be happy for her to see a PG as I know she would react badly.

My 6 yr old has been driven to clamber on my knee, begging the film to stop and in some cases crying with fear while watching Nanny McPhee, Ice Age, Ponyo, Up and Barbie Three Musketeers, (ffs!) so I would very much want to be told if school were planning on them watching a PG.

Glad she's not the only one, though Littlefish.

We watch 'Babe' at home, which is U rated. However, there is a scene with vicious dogs in it that I chose not to show to my DS (then 4) who was afraid of dogs. On the other hand we watched PG reated films that seemed suitable to me.

I wouldn't be happy for my ds(6) to be shown PG films at school. He does watch some PG films at home, with us, where he has the option to turn them off if he wants. He was shown The Wizard of Oz in nursery which I was horrified about because it scared him to death (He is a bit of a wuss!) Teachers don't know how their students may react.

I saw an old version of The Wizard of Oz when I was a kid and I was terrified. I remember it well and still feel uneasy when I see that particular version of the film (never saw any other versions though).
